I've seen both Slayer & Megadeth in the last few years, so I'll probably pass on both. But given the venues I'd lean towards Megadeth/Children of Bodom if I had to choose one. But Testament opening for Slayer ain't too shabby either.

Sounds like you might enjoy the Power Metal genre, which is basically a modern take on 80's hair metal. Blind Guardian is one of the standard bearers for that genre, if you like awesome guitar riffs and solos then check this out

I have this thing where I buy records music un-heard so that it's my first time hearing a song when I play an album for the first time (therefore, no previewing on Youtube!).
This list helps a lot. From what I recognize from the above, this might be pretty spot on. I now remember the Lynch solo from "In My Dreams" from when I was a little kid and thinking it was great and trying to teach myself it on guitar.
I remember reading about Sykes. Is there any good stuff from when he was with Thin Lizzy? (another situation where I know what Thin Lizzy is because I keep seeing the albums in stores but I am refraining from actually listening to anything from them unless I actually buy the album!).
On the Classic vs. Modern thing, I just feel that classic is a little more melodic and new metal is a little too much emphasis on drums and djent.

May I suggest Mekong Delta? Bit of an acquired taste, but based on what you are asking for maybe it will tickle your fancy?

Anthrax: Volume 8 (Hey, not their best but there's some awesomely catchy tunes in there)
Anything Coheed and Cambria. These guys are doing it right.
I really want to say Fear Factory but I feel that may be too far out of your range.

That's about all I could recommend right now. If you ever get into some newer and heavier stuff I'd love to make some recommendations.
Honestly though, I'm not too up on good eighties metal other than the old stand bys like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Sepultura etc... So these ones may not wet your appetite so much.
Speaking of Coheed and Cambria, Has anyone given their new release ( The color before the Sun) a good rinse? I love it so far through the first listen through. Just so clean and good.

Yeah I like it too, very catchy at times. I think the band benefits from moving on from the confusing sci-fi stuff.
Phil Anselmo makes a total ass of himself at Dimebash this year. He was making anti semetic gestures and yelling out "white power". This has no place anywhere and especially not in metal music where scrutiny is heavily focused. Robb Flynn from machine head calls him out in a brilliant speech. This is a must watch for all metal heads and skeptics.

Phil sucks, and always has. He's had plenty of incidents like this in the past, not sure why anyone is surprised. Metal music in general has a long history of racism. Glad people are finally starting to realize it, and call it what it is.
