Icon39 Value of Oliver Ekman-Larsson to Calgary

There are rumblings that Treiliving and Maloney being in on bringing him North. I would like a first rounder as a fan but wouldn't mind a player of value coming down here.

I don't know if this is due for another thread, but are Flames fans interested in the guy? Since his mother passed away from Cancer he has seemed checked out here in Arizona and a change of scenery would probably do him good.

I have very reserved interest in OEL. His contract is not appealing whatsoever and his decreased production is concerning. He seems like a Bouwmeester redux with a much worse contract.

It could work out but I think it has a far higher likelihood to fail.

Derek Ryan + Noah Hanifin for OEL. I’m into that deal. Cap hits for 20/21 equal out, but Arizona’s cap relief comes into play as years go forward, they can also flip Ryan for a later pick.

Derek Ryan + Noah Hanifin + 2021 1st for OEL + Kuemper + Hall’s rights also works for me.

I think OEL needs a better partner (Andersson) and a fresh start. He’ll be back to being a solid top pairing defenceman for the next 5 years. He’s also 3rd in hits by a defenceman last season behind Risto and Gudas, and I think our defence needs that.

I don't mind OEL and Hall.. but it would also be nice to bring in players who haven't been on losing teams their entire career.

I feel this is overrated.. We thought bringing in Kessel and his 2 cups was worth a damn.

The contract is the biggest problem with moving OEL. When it was signed, it was probably under the understanding that he would be a Coyote for life.

If Arizona really wants a decent return for him, they are going to have to eat some salary, and that cannot be appetizing. If they want a player with as much skill and upside as Hanifin...

OEL (2M retained) + Jan Jenik

The other option is that Arizona is going to get an extremely unthrilling return. That contract is a killer.

It's quite possible that Hanifin-Andersson will be our top D pairing next season, and you want to trade Hanifin for an older D with a much worse contract and declining production? I get that Kuemper could be an upgrade for us if he is healthy, but the cost is way too high.

The second deal is one that I think has all kinds of legitimate chances of happening. I could even see it being this year as the Flames would move Gaudreau in a deal to Buffalo/New Jersey while receiving their first round pick this summer.

Not sure I like trading a 1st and Hanifin for a Dman who gets paid 3.3M more than Hanifin and is 6 years older.

One thing Freidman and Boomer discussed on the Fan this morning is the Flames previous interest in OEL back in 2018 before he signed his extension and the fact many insiders/scouts believe OEL needs a change of scenery and he could bounce back to being that top Dman (scary roll of the dice)

Let's see...

A 29 year old defenseman with diminishing contributions with an $8.25 million cap hit until 2027?

What would Arizona give us to take him?

I have zero interest in the Flames acquiring OEL at that cap hit and contract.

OEL did play in the WCF in 2012 and hard to fault him playing for one of the biggest struggling franchises over his career.

Kind of the same for Hall. He was drafted by the worst run team in professional sports near the beginning of their ineptitude. He was traded to another franchise in the throes of a rebuild and was able to carry that team to a playoff appearance almost by himself.

I think this is a bad trade.

As for salary retention on OEL, 2 million dollar retention works out to 14 million dollars over the life of the deal.

Not even the Rangers and the Leafs with all their billions would do that. Maybe for 10 first round picks.

No interest in OEL whatsoever ever. Theres no way the Flames could keep building into a contending team with the anchor of the RMS Titanic that is OELs contract. ARZ as an organization absolutely cannot retain any salary on it either.

That would be a horrible, crippling trade for Calgary.

$8.25M for the next 7 years for a 29-year old defenseman who had a very mediocre year sounds like a great way to cripple your franchise.

Hell, Hanifin has more 5v5 points than OEL over the last 3 seasons and his defensive metrics aren't any worse.

I'll give a BIG "F*** no" to that.

Not interested in his contract AT ALL. No way should the Flames be giving up a 1st round pick.

OEL ($8.25M) for Ryan ($3.125M) + Lucic ($5.75M) + 2nd

Otherwise, no thank you

even then I am not interested, as the last few years of that contract are franchise-crushing

'Yotes need to retain salary on that contract.

I wonder if they would entertain 50% retention of salary......
