Woman ordered to pay ex $375k after fake rejection letter from dream school
Crazy story.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...o-prestigious/
Summary:
In 2013 a Canadian clarinetist got accepted into a prestigious music school with a full ride scholarship.
His then girlfriend was able to intercept the acceptance e-mail, delete it, and faked a rejection e-mail. She also sent the school an e-mail posing as the clarinetist turning down their offer. The clarinetist thought he got rejected and that was the end of that.
In 2016 he auditioned for the same professor that had made the scholarship offer. The professor questioned why the clarinetist wanted to study under him after turning down the previous offer.
This set off alarm bells and after some investigating, the clarinetist was able to discover his ex-girlfriends deception.
Quote:
The judge agreed, awarding Abramovitz $300,000 for the value of the lost scholarship and income, as well as an additional $75,000 for legal fees and compensation for having a “dream snatched from him by a person he trusted.”

I was reading this story the other day. Crazy stuff. He'll probably never be able to collect it, but it was an interesting judgement.

Good for him, although money will never bring back what he lost as far as training and experience.
There are some seriously mean, vindictive, and manipulative people out there. They need to be punished for their actions.

Crap, this is probably why I didn’t get into Harvard. Who knows how high I could’ve soared.

It's sounds like she didn't destroy his career as he now plays for the Toronto Symphony and still eventually trained under the professor he wanted to. You could imagine a far worse outcome where this prevented from being a professional musician.
What a horrible selfish person I hope she ended up with criminal charges as a civil judgment that she may never pay is not enough.

I think it's kind of perfect for a civil case. I wouldn't really want criminal resources used for this. There are lots of people who get screwed out of income, capital and live style that only get civil restitution. She's worse than some and better than others.

Damn why didn't I think I that when my college girlfriend was applying to do her masters at Dalhousie...
Seriously though, wow sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. Hopefully this is turned into a book and film. It has a battle with adversity and a happy ending but really I'm mostly interested in this woman and her epic craziness.

It was a $300,000 fraud. That should come with criminal charges.

They should have added a thousand hours of standing on a street corner wearing a sign describing what she did.
She's a complete pos, its just fortunate that the victim was talented enough to overcome her sabotage.
