Icon41 Sharks sign Evander Kane to extension (7 years, $7 million AAV)

https://twitter.com/user/status/999062077246324736

If true would mean the Sharks have upgraded the conditional 2019 2nd round pick to a 2019 1st round pick to the Sabres

Worth it. Hell of a player.

Outside of Tavares, Free Agency is an utter wasteland now. Treliving better have a rabbit in his hat, or really be banking on Gully being a huge part of the failure we all witnessed last season...

7x7? More than I figured he would get. Good for Buffalo too, they get that 1st now.

Don't want to see more of Evander Kane. :| I think he was very effective for SJ and makes them a more difficult team to play.

I'm curious to see if history repeats itself with Kane eventually turning the room against himself.

Last year of contract Kane has always been a lot better than locked in Kane, so I'm not that worried. Also, if Tavares does become available, this contract must make it a lot harder for SJ to be in the running from a cap standpoint.

Assuming $80 million salary cap, this leaves the Sharks with ~$13 million in cap space with 21 players signed on capfirendly

Notable RFAs: Hertel
Notable UFAs: Thornton, Ward

They can still fit Tavares in if they say goodbye to Thornton and get Hertel on a hometown discount and maybe 1 salary dump (Paul Martin's $4.85 mil cap hit)

Just don't think they'd have extended Kane W/O knowing they had a shot at Tavares first. Priorieties and all. Thinking JT is gonna sign with old uncle Lou-bear on the Island.

If anything, that leaves SJ plenty of room to take some time and find a Jumbo Joe replacement.

I see this is a bullet dodged as I don't see him as value on an extended contract.

Playing for a contract on a new team is the situation that is built for sucking a team in. Glad he's not coming to Calgary.

Why would San Jose go after Tavares when their 1C is Pavelski?

Probably a terrible contract but only time will tell.

Kane seems to me like a prima donna who worked hard come contract time. I don't expect his play to match his last 20 some games in SJ.

Really hoping this blows up in San Jose's face.

To make the team better?

Teams are allowed a number of good players.

It hasn't seemed to hurt the Penguins having 2 No. 1 centres.

Because Pavelski is about to turn 34 and 1 year away from UFA.

And make Couture the 3C? After Kane their best winger is Hertl

You can pretty much say that about every UFA contract theses days.

The player almost always signs for more money that everyone hoped for.

If you want to improve the team quickly, you pretty much have to play the UFA game, or simply roll the dice and hope your current team gets better.

But you are rolling the dice either way of course.

Kane will make SJ a better team.

There is lots of ice time available for good players.

Centres can play the wing on the PP if required.

Glad he isn't on the flames at 7x7 but he's basically exactly what the team is lacking.

Wonder what the asking price was at the draft last year.
