Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #5 Defenseman
So some details ...
1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.
Calgary Flames All Time Roster
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
Hakan Loob - Kent Nilsson
Al MacInnis - Mark Giordano
Gary Suter - Robyn Regehr
D5 - D6
D7
Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

Sarge - his career plus/minus was unreal.

If it were up to me, and god willing, it is:
MacInnis - Giordano
Suter - Reinhart
McCrimmon-Regehr

I voted for Reinhart, given his stats. Phaneuf would get the vote for me for #6.
I’m not sure who I would vote for, for #7, but it might actually be Brodie.

TJ Brodie.
634 games as a Flame. 266 points. He and Reinhart round out the top 6 for me.

Certainly hope this is Rhino’s turn finally. I’m a little perplexed that it could even be close. Mccrimmon is a great player, but he had three seasons with the club. He was a steadying, solid presence on the 1989 team and when Suter went down, his importance elevated. But he has three seasons.
Brodie is a nice player and has tenure but not even close to the class of these guys.
I get Phaneuf a little, he had three excellent seasons with the club. Never made it out of the first round.
I have said it before but Reinhart is the second leading scorer among all players for the franchise in the playoffs. That alone gets him on the team.
But he was an excellent defenseman in the regular season too and if he hadn’t had such a hard time staying on the ice, he’d be an all time franchise great. Actually in my mind he is. Some deep playoff runs where he played great clinches it for me.

Reinhart now, McCrimmon next (love that pairing). partly strategic as I think Reinhart has the better chance here- long boring breakdown of my explanation to follow

I went Paul Reinhart.
He was just so forgotten. Part of the start in Calgary and then over looked when MacInnis and Suter came on to the scene ... essentially given away for nothing.

A lot of discussion around tenure vs quality of play which makes me wonder would Kawhi Leonard not making the Raptors all time line up just because of his one season tenure?
For me its getting tough to vote now because we're into guys I've seen (Brodie, Phaneuf, J-Bo) vs guys i've heard of and read about (MaCoun, Reinhart, McCrimmon)
Stats wise I'm going with Reinhart

Brodie is the Clear cut #1 d-man for the Flames in the playoffs since the 2004 run
20 games 11 pts +1 25:00/ game
Over the same time period
Gio 13 games 4 pts -6 21:46 / game
Phanuef 25 games 12 pts -12 24:06/game
Playoffs where legends are made

so then probably Reinhart (the Flames 2nd leading playoff scorer of all time - period) or Macoun/McCrimmon (two of the top 3 healthy d when Lord Stanley took a spin around the forum) are good choices

TJ Brodie is half of the best D pairing the Flames have ever had. Gio has consistently been Norris calibre with Brodie, not so much without him.
He's more comfortable and better as RD, but he is serviceable as LD.
I think he's under appreciated around here.

Reinhart here.
I will be deciding between who gets in the top 6 between Phaneuf and Brodie. Leaning more towards Phaneuf with Brodie as a solid #7.

Brodie is not underappreciated around here.
It's just there are half of us that love him and think he is a big part of Gio's success and the other half who think he a good top 4 dman but isn't the reason the pairing is so dominant.
Gio-Andersson pairing looked pretty solid when together as well.
Brodie is like Bennett in that they are polarizing players who cause a divide in the fanbase. I think Hamonic and Hanifin and even Gaudreau are viewed in a similar vein.
They arent like Gio, Lindholm, Tkachuk and Andersson where they are revered by everyone in the fanbase.

Why is housley getting so few votes? Did he not have very many games played as a Flame?

I think voters are using different criteria in selecting who is "best".

I think age plays a part. Not many replays on TSN of the Housley years.

McCrimmon went toe to toe with McInnis and Suter in Norris and AST voting, was legitimately considered one of the best defensemen in the league while he was a member of the Flames, and was a big part of the cup winning team. He's being criminally underrated.
