Default Pronman ranks top 155 U-23 players

Full article: https://theathletic.com/2132927/2020...nmans-top-155/

Top 25 for discussion:

1. Auston Matthews
2. Rasmus Dahlin
3. Elias Pettersson
4. Alexis Lafreniere
5. Matthew Tkachuk
6. Andrei Svechnikov
7. Patrick Laine
8. Jack Hughes
9. Kaapo Kakko
10. Quinton Byfield
11. Quinn Hughes
12. Brady Tkachuk
13. Cale Makar
14. Miro Heiskanen
15. Tim Stutzle
16. Kirby Dach
17. Lucas Raymond
18. Pierre Luc-Dubois
19. Cole Perfetti
20. Robert Thomas
21. Nico Hischier
22. Milhail Sergachev
23. Trevor Zegras
24. Charlie McAvoy
25. Barrett Hayton

Love the ranking of Tkachuk, but there are some puzzling things here. Hayton is way higher than expected, Heiskanen and Makar lower.

Valimaki at 112 below so many worse players in my opinion. Zary for instance is 60 (Dube was 62)

Not sure how Lafreniere, Byfield are top 10 without a single game in the NHL. Is Kirby Dach better than Pierre Luc-Dubois?

That's a sketchy list for sure.

I don’t know how anyone could watch Quinn and Jack Hughes play and rank Jack higher. Not only that, but he’s also ahead of Makar and Heiskanen which seems absurd to me.

Where do the Oilers top prospects rank?

(Broberg, Bouchard, Halloway, etc)

I love Matthew Tkachuk but I'm really surprised at how high he is here.

Constantly forget how young Tkachuk is. He has so much more room to grow. As he gets stronger his pest/physical game will only get better. The fact he stepped into the league and was immediately able to go toe to toe physically with the best of the best is such a win for this franchise.

Still baffled, we were able to get him at #6. The fact it was the Canucks and Oilers who both passed on him really warms my heart every time I think about it.

This is a quick explanation.

This incorporates the players drafted between 2016 and 2020. It is a projection of who will have the best careers, not who is the best player today.

Just looking at the top defensemen:

Dahlin
Hughes
Makar
Heiskanen

shocks me. I would exactly reverse it.

I agree but IMO they’re all so close at this point.

116 Yamamoto
134 Bouchard
150 Lavoie

Clearly wasn't convinced by Yamamoto's NHL numbers last year (almost a PPG); he also says Puljujarvi will "find a way to help an NHL team" given his toolkit. I interpret that to mean it likely won't be with the Oilers.

I'll be curious how Broberg rates that much higher than Valimaki. At least Valimaki rates higher than Bouchard. Still this is only one perspective. I like combination lists better as gives you a better sense of where the "consensus" views on prospects are.

It's a pretty strange list, but given that he is trying to project entire careers and I have seen almost nothing from many of the players it is not worth trying to dispute anything. I was a little disappointed to see Pelletier miss the cut as I am hoping that he will at least be similarly impactful as Dube.

Jack Hughes to be rated so high as a D-man is incredible. But I guess that getting drafted first overall as a C a year ago would indicate he has a high ceiling.

Quinn Hughes (21 yr old Vancouver D-men) did not make this top 25.... that would be a bit of surprise.

ooopss both are there

Dubois should be way higher. Just watch a Jackets game. Dude is already Bergeron-esque as a game breaker.

Heiskanen at 14 seems low, especially considering he was a likely Conn Smythe winner if Dallas won the Cup.

Well now I’m confused is it Quinn or Jack in the top 25?
