Flames Valimaki and Hamonic at morning skate!

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Juuso Valimaki is on the ice for morning skate today.

First time he’s skated with the team since sustaining a high ankle sprain on November 23rd. #Flames

Probably still some work to do before he gets in a game, but good sign.

Yes!

It is so awesome to have the team doing as well as they are, and to still have players like Valimaki and Stone nearing readiness to rejoin the team in the next few weeks.

Hamonic is back too!

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Optional morning skate for Calgary. Travis Hamonic is out there, so he’s set to return after missing two games for a family illness.

Mike Smith in the starter’s net this morning. Looks like he’ll get the start in net tonight vs. Detroit. #Flames

Hamonic back is huge. And good to see Smith play tonight, I'm assuming it's Rittich tomorrow unless Smith stands on his head.

Good to have Hamonic back.

Personally I'd probably send Valimaki down to the AHL for a conditioning stint once he's ready. That's a long time to miss for a guy his age and think he would be better served getting up to speed in the AHL.

I wonder if Valimaki will go for a conditioning stint first?

Valimaki and Stone probably both start in the AHL.

We need Smith playing well done the stretch so here's hoping for another win from him.

I would bet that Rittich starts in Edmonton regardless of how well Smith plays. I hope he has another good game tonight.

good news all around, hope everything's ok with hamonic. guy deserves nothing but the best.

valimaki to the ahl for a conditioning stint seems like a good call. he'd also get the chance to play big minutes on the pp, which he didn't get to before he got injured

It looks like Rittich and Smith are going to continue splitting starts. That's not how I would handle their starts but since that's what's happening, we definitely need Smith to perform.

It's probably better for his long term development to spend some serious time in Stockton. He's played defensively at an NHL level, but there's probably untapped offensive potential that could use developing.

That’s not what it has been at all lately. Smith got a spot start against Arizona and now he plays one of the back to backs, that’s your typical back up goalie workload. Rittich has had the lions share of the starts.

And the Arizona spot was likely only because Rittich hasn't been feeling 100% recently + Mike Smith's old team.

Coach has handled the goaltenders spectacularly, in my opinion. When you have a veteran starter you need to give him a lot of rope, and Smith hung himself with it, including at a 50/50 split.
Smith has been solid as backup. And I'm not certain his story has been entirely played out yet. Tbh, I hope it has, but if needed I expect Smith to be ready and able.

Valamaki can go play during the 9 day break in the Ahl. Get back up to speed and see where he is at.

I think Stone mentioned that a decision about his blood thinners would be coming up this week.

It takes a few days for them to wear off. So if he isn’t skating with the team by next week, we can probably assume it’ll be a while yet

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Travis Hamonic and his wife had to rush their eight-month old daughter Charlie to the Alberta Children's Hospital on Sunday. "She's been really sick. It's been a hard week for my wife and I and our entire family...as a Dad it brings tears to your eyes for different reasons."

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
"To see your daughter in that circumstance is a nightmare. But the Children's Hospital, the staff, the nurses, and the care that she got at that hospital was second to none." Hamonic and his wife Stephanie are hoping Charlie can come home today.

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
They've also been pulling all-nighters at the hospital to be by her side. Says it was extremely serious. "It's hard to talk about."
