They would just probably put him back on waivers to terminate again.
It is a moot situation really. Don't think any team has claimed someone off unconditional waivers.
If any team is interested in Berglund, they will probably sign him for less money, less cap hit, and less term than his current contract once it is terminated. Assuming Berglund wants to be there.

I know Sweden is probably the direction he goes, but if a team were to sign him, would he not need to go through waivers since he has played a professional game (O'Reily situation)

A dirtbag is a very useful part of the vacuum cleaner. Clearly, it's a compliment.

That rule only applies to players who played in a pro league outside of North America after the season starts.
Berglund has not played in such a league yet, so it is not the same as the ROR situation.
If he were to go to Sweden play at least one game and tries to come back to the NHL this season, then he would require waivers.

Yeah... who'd want to play in a hockey outpost like Buffalo when the bright lights of Traktor Chelyabinsk beckon?

Id give him a contract(1 year). Better player than his recent play.

I know we don't have the cap space, but he might look good on a 3rd or 4th line on a value contract. I wonder if Backlund and Lindholm (potentially Loob)could sway him this way.

I can see the Flames signing him for the remainder of the season. I agree he would be a solid piece for the bottom 6.

Lifetime Suspension

Maybe he just doesn't want to play hockey anymore? Sweden is the kind of country where you don't need very many millions to have a nice life.
He's leaving a lot of money on the table if he still wants to play hockey for a living.

That is possible, but if that were the case he could have just as easily filed his retirement papers. Instead of causing this public and potentially embarrassing situation.

He still could have lots of hockey ahead of him.
I think he’s a solid player but I wouldn’t sign him here, he would be a good fit somewhere else though

I'm alright with this. Between this contract going away and Moulson off the books at the end of the year, we just found the money to give Skinner a nice raise on an extension.

For who? Berglund? Seems like a pretty obvious business decision from the Sabres, or any business ever when a contract is broken.

Ya, this is a really poor decision on his part if he still wants to play.

I would have played out the string and collected the $12.5M while Eichel and Dahlin got all the media attention.

Yes, Berglund. That's a ton of money to give up. Of course it's a gimme for Buffalo.

Dude has made like 10+ million dollars and he's 30 years old. His and many future generations are set for life, if he really just doesnt have the passion required anymore, good on him

Couple that with the start to the season and he's probably just extremely frustrated at this whole situation. Doesn't seem like he's pouting because he's not getting the proper minutes or something, seems to me it's more of a guy who felt hurt and betrayed by what his GM did.

Sure, he feels burned...
...but refusing to play for the team who gave up assets to have you on the roster is about as crappy as you can be. That nearly $13M wasn't enough for you to play hockey in a city that isn't your favourite is inexcusable.
That he and his agent failed in their responsibility to submit teams as well just further aids to this apparent tantrum being an embarrassment to this professional hockey player.
Good riddance.

Yeah, I'm always a big fan of people that think for themselves only and do whatever the hell they want too.
More of that please!
