Also, do they breakdown the players into groups ? Elite players likely have more extended primes. Also, guys may break into the league and put up 40 pts, but then find their niche is a 20pt 4th line/PK specialist.

If the Flames are going to establish themselves as having had a successful rebuild the time to do it is now. One more year and they will be significantly delayed as compared to your other examples.
Tinordi is a goof but I think he's absolutely correct in his outlook for where the team should be going. In a season where everything is going right for the team in terms of their star players (and that includes Smith), when the team has no first or second round pick, you absolutely HAVE to go for it starting now.

Jankowski had a very normal development path though right?
Typically players peak offensively within their first 3-5 seasons but they become better overall players as they get older.

Dreger states that an NHL execuitve believes Tavares will receive a 15M a year for 7 years contract if Tavares hits free market.
Even I think that's exceptionally high, but I believe it does put in perspective those believing Tavares will sign a contract similar to Stamkos'. I wonder if a team is trying to tempt Tavares to at least consider free agency.
Of note, the new Carolina owner has been preaching about giving fans a reason to come to the games, they have a billion in cap space, and are in need of a top tier forward.

It will also be likely that the cap ceiling officially doubles from when it was first introduced in 2005.
Sure, it was a different time, but when you had players like Jagr, Lidstrom, Yashin, Sakic and new contracts like Iginla and friends making 7M+ that year, contracts with AAV of doubled that in a time when the ceiling is doubled isn't completely crazy. Even contracts like Drury and Gomez'in 2007-2008 would work out to be about 12M today and at no point were either of them ever on Tavares' level.

$15 million is ridiculous and I'll believe it when I see it.
Probably some executive using the media to tempt Tavares to test free agency rather than extend with the Isles early.

Tavares hitting ufa would be huge. I think there would be at least 15 teams bidding on his services, the thing is would be go for the most money or best chance to win? I'm sure some team will offer him a max contact but I'm willing to bet he'd never win with that team. He can still sign a huge deal but leave money on the table and have a chance at winning. I'm excited to see what he does.

Tavares was a Hart Trophy nominee in 2013, with many believing he should have won. If it wasn't for Ovechkin's reputation he probably already would have had one.
In 2014, he missed 20 games. But had he not, he probably gets a look at it again as one of the highest point-per-game producers that year.
Nominated again in 2015 but that was Price's year of domination.
He has gone his entire career with forwards that can be separated into two groups: players that got to play with Tavares and looked really good, and players that didn't and looked bad. Often changing from season to season and game to game.
This year they get some actual secondary scoring in Eberle and Barzal and Tavares is now within striking distance of both the Art Ross and Rocket Richard trophies. And one of the few people ahead of him in the Rocket Richard trophy is Anders ####ing Lee, his linemate and biggest product of a player since Thornton turned Cheechoo into a Rocket Richard winner.
Seriously here are Lee's goals by season since he entered full time as a 24 year old:
2014-2015 - 25 goals in 76 games - played partially with Tavares
2015-2016 - 15 goals in 80 games - did not play with Tavares
2016-2017 - 34 goals in 81 games - played with Tavares
2017-2018 - 26 goals in 47 games - playing with Tavares
Tavares is turning a 15 goal scoring into a player on pace for 45 goals. The only players in the league with a higher PPG since the last lockout are McDavid, Crosby, Malkin and Kane. He'd easily be considered a top 5 player in the league if he wasn't toiling on an NHL team that has simply been carried by him. Now he's a UFA center at 27 potentially entering into free agenct. If he wants it, every team in the league outside of Pittsburgh would back a truck full of cash towards him and deal with the aftermath.

I hope we dont make a move unless its to move out Stone or Frolik for a first rounder. it seems to me over the last 3 deadlines, 9 out of 10 trades are won by the seller. the best moves are the ones where we make space for the young guys it seems

15 million...
could you afford to even ice a decent lineup? or would the 4th and 3rd lines be filled by guys making the NHL minimum?

Why would the Flames move out a roster player for picks at the deadline? Not gonna happen unless they fall out of the race.

I really would like to see the math and see where the money is better spent.
spending on Tavares for 15m a year and having 3 of guys like Hathaway, F. Hamilton, on your third fourth line.
Subtract Brower and Stajan and I would gladly take Tavares for 13m.

IMO Tavares won't hit free agency. He seems to want to stay. The arena announcements included him in a fairly major way. My first thought about this was that Barzal made losing Tavares a little more palatable for the Isles. But I actually think it works more in their favour. Tavares could see the team moving in a positive direction.
And when was the last time a guy like him (or even close) actually made it to unlimited free agency?

have to run to work...
however, we joke about the Oilers on the verge of entering cap hell, and McDavid is only at 12.5 million, not 15...
so, if they are in trouble w/ mcdavid, i don't see how/why calgary would be able to do it... not to mention guys like guadrea/monny probably wanting/deserving more salary too then if the flames are throwing those numbers around

The more I look at the roster and the returning players and Stockton, I really think standing pat, or a minor deal is better. I look at how long it took a guy like Harmonic to fit in and get comfortable, I question how much a major deal could disrupt the current chemistry.Id even question moving Stagan for a pick as he seems to have some leadership and bond.

I completely agree, I just think it is the stars that win championships.
I would take Tavares Gaudreau and Monahan over Mcdavid, Draisytle and Lucic for the same money.
Malkin Crosby Kessel are 25 Million a year.
When powerplays come around I think that is more important than 3rd and 4th line depth, which should be rookies earning league minumim.

Friedman made some interesting comments on the fan this morning.
1. Thinks it is becoming a buyers market with Ottawa, Buffalo, Montreal, Arizona, etc emerging as sellers
2. Thinks the Flames are not as desperate for a winger as they were a month ago. Still likely on the periphery on Hoffman but the concern is his cap hit with new contracts for Ferland and Tkachuk needed next year.

I live in Vancouver and someone close to his family mentioned to him that Evander is interested in the Flames as a possible landing spot. Says he is not keen to necessarily play too close to home but likes where the Flames are headed and thinks it might be a good compromise. Mentioned that he heard Flames are willing to part with Bennett as his contract will most likely be pricey and a blue chip defensive prospect. I would think it might also take a pick of some sort. Think this is even possible?
Take with a grain of salt.

It's not McDavid that's causing the cap hell. Again, Iginla signed a 7M contract when the cap was 39M and the Flames were able to ice a Northwest division champ team (in large part thanks to Kiprusoff). That's 18% of the cap at the time. I know it's not an exact correlation, but 18% of an 80M cap would be 14.5M.
Ovechkin was making 17% of the future cap when he originally signed in 2008. They were able to build three President Trophy winning teams around him and that contract.
The issue with the Oilers is pretty much everyone else. Lucic at 6M, Russell 4M, Kassian at 2M, Draistail at 8.5M depending on your view on him and Pouliot at a 1.3M buyout. That's a lot of cap-space that could be filled with cheaper players or those that should be the equivalent of ELC contracts but they have no prospects that weren't drafted 1st overall. There's not a cap-hit in 2019 currently on the Oilers that you're getting 'additional value' for. Unless Puljujärvi breaks out in a big way or Talbot bounces back significantly.
Again, even as a big proponent of Tavares and 'high priced contracts' I think 15M is pushing it. But if you wanted to see a possible team that could contend with a 15M Tavares, look at a team like the Hurricanes who have been in-and-out of the playoffs all season. They could simply add a 15M contract at the beginning of the year without having to remove anyone instantly filling their biggest need.
Imagine how much better the Devils would be if they had Tavares at 10M+ instead of Zajac at 6M this year. Easily overshoot the Capitals and probably racing with the Lightning for first.
