Gaudreau is not a linesman. I expect that there is a different assumption of risk on the part of players.

ya, i don't get that either.
When a player gets injured (ie. all these concussion related law suits) are taken against the league, not the team the player played for.
why is it any different for this referee situation?

The rumour was that the union was pressuring him to retire even before the incident. I am pretty sure there is a story about that somewhere.

I think the Flames had likely asked this to be delayed until the season was over so they can effectively throw Wideman under the bus in their SoD. Unlike the Bertuzzi incident, the Flames were never involved in the actual event: yes, they may be sued by Wideman for events after the hit, but that was going to happen anyway.
The officiating/NHL will support the Flames; but it will be interesting to see what the NHLPA thinks of it when the Flames call Wideman a lone wolf and create distance between him and the organization.

And he conspired with the refs to make sure it was quick.
Conspiracy done and unfolded.

classic lawyering... no offense to any lawyers out there...
i thought the rule of thumb was to sue everyone and let the courts figure it out...

Please, Flames. Do not fight this. Settle immediately.
Burke and Treliving fighting for Wideman on appeal was the biggest mistakes of their tenures. They should have told Wideman to sit down, shut up, say sorry, and accept the punishment.

The Flames had to support their player.
Good luck attracting anyone to the team if the team doesn't support players in these kinds of situation.
Whether or not they actually support Wideman doesn't matter. Their hands were tied.

Wait a minute.
He had neck surgery for two ruptured disks there was nothing about dental eye or foot injuries, yet the Flames are being put on the hook for those?
Get stuffed, this sounds like a fishing trip all of a sudden by his lawyers.
Ow my eyes, my feet, my fallen arches. I also had to get rabies shots.
Oh and my psychiatrist says that I'm suffering from nightmares and pee my self all the time. Give me money.
I have all the sympathy in the world for him, he had two ruptured discs repaired. But come on man. He wasn't run over by a tank.

wait, "thrown under the bus"?!
Let's be very clear here: Wideman was a lone wolf. He got nailed in the corner, got up pissed headed to the bench where he proceeded to nail Henderson.
No where do I see the Flames organization, GM, or coach... unless you're suggesting Hartley was prescient enough to forecast and uncalled cheapshot and challenge Wideman to assault a linesman after it went uncalled.

I get that sentiment, but disagree in this case. There was nothing to support. The only thing that was going to come out of it was pissing off all the referees and linesman.

Seems pretty standard to include the employer, seeing as it happened while Wideman was working for the Flames.

Hm...thats interesting. So now the Government wants to pick and choose who has to pick up the tab for Universal Health Care?
