Calgary to host UFC on July 21
As per sportsnet sports alert email...
Quote:
Sportsnet and Sportsnet 590 THE FAN's "Showdown" Joe Ferraro reports the UFC is set to announce an upcoming event in Calgary, Alberta. Ferraro's sources tell him the Calgary event will take place on July 21st, and will be the first of three Canadian stops on the UFC calendar this year. Toronto (venue TBA) and Montreal (Bell Centre) are the others.

The UFC is a huge event, especially in the Canadian cities they've gone to. This is a huge event for the city of Calgary.
Also nice to see us get it before Edmonton, after losing the WEC event to them a couple years back. I'll wait till it's official though, we've been teased about this before.

Awesome
I'm surprised they're doing one in Calgary, let alone consider it here.

Why?
I think Alberta is a huge market for MMA, and doing it the weekend after the Stampede is a good move on their part.

There is a burgeoning MMA base growing here, especially in Edmonton. With the MFC based in Greaserville (not to mention a WEC event already held there), I would say outside of Ontario (and possibly Quebec), Alberta is the next largest market for MMA in Canada.
Dana hinted at this a couple of years ago that it would come. Glad to see its coming to fruition.

Awesome, I would love to attend, but I suspect ticket prices may be too rich for my blood. But I know their will be people in my circle of friends that'll go at all cost.

If it is rumored to be on July 21, is it not a well-timed date for a possible early GSP return? I think he's ahead of schedule in terms of rehabbing his injury/injuries.

I dont think they would use GSP in Calgary. They will use him to sell out a larger stadium.
Ill be going even if its against the back wall of the nose bleeds. Watching on tv is better for watching the fights (unless your on the floor) but the atmosphere is unlike anything during a fight. Kind of like a college football game in the states.

GSP's supposed to be back in November or late October.
Glad to hear this is finally happening.

I'm pretty stoked, hope tickets aren't outrageous so I can actually go.

Actually GSP is too large of a name for a Calgary event . . . Toronto is much better for him.
Somehow I think we'll get a main event like the one next month (Kampmann /Alves) . . . Two upper mid card guys as headliners.
Would love to see some heavyweight fights though.

Not that I'm not stoked for Kampman and Alves, that's a sick fight, I think if it's a PPV event we should see something bigger.

I went to an event in Vegas, the ticket prices were crazy but it was fun. The ticket prices will probably be stupid here too.

I talked to some guys who train and the calgary athletic commission (or whatever the equivalent is) is completely f'ed in the a, which is why we lost the WEC event to edmonton.
I hope they have things figured out now, but I'm remaining pessimistic until tickets go on sale, at which point I will squeal like a girl.

The athletic commission is a local body? I would have thought it would be provincial.

sounds like it, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's different than edmonton's.

Calgary Combative Sports Commission is the folks who license boxing, MMA etc events in Calgary.
http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/DBA/Pages/...ommission.aspx
If you google it I think you will find some discussion as to why larger events (like those held @ the Stampede Corral or Max Bell Arena) have waned in Calgary.

I wonder what the timeline on Faber-Cruz 3 is?
The Overeem-Dos Santos fight is earlier in July, so if their is two PPV events that month I would love to see that fight.
