I am not sure if this is really a big win. I know in 2013 they stopped the global x games because it was a money loser. The Summer X has been bouncing around city to city every 3 year contract. And the stadium in Minnesota looked pretty empty You don't get the same TV rights coverage for the international X events that you do the true X-Games. This feels 10 years too late.
They just signed another 5 years at Aspen so we are definitely getting the second rate X Games Canada

Umm hasn't XS Cargo been gone for like 10 years now? I miss their low quality electronics and ####ty vacuum cleaners crap.

Where did you see that they signed on for 5 years at Aspen? The Winter X Games are just one event and it will be in Calgary for the next 3.

I didn’t realize it would also remain in Aspen. But if the athletes are touring the different locations then I actually like this even more.

Could be cool. It'll be interesting to see how they accommodate the different events but I'll definitely go.

I think it's just Calgary as the main Winter X games of North America. Aspen is out.

I dunno. The articles aren't very specific.
Quote:
CALGARY, March 13, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda, Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Tourism Calgary CEO Cindy Ady announced that Calgary has secured the exclusive Canadian rights to host X Games for a minimum three-year run.
As the most relevant action sports and music festival in youth culture, featuring the best snowboarders and freestyle skiers and the most influential music artists in the world, hosting the X Games would bring significant economic benefits to Calgary, including an estimated: $75 million in annual economic activity, 75,000 annual spectators and more than 10,000 out-of-region annual visitors.
|
To me that doesn't sound like its leaving Aspen, where it has been for the last what 15 years? This sounds like a Canadian stop?
Why would you be getting the "Canadian rights" to host... if you are hosting the X-games?

It absolutely is not leaving Aspen.

X will mark the spot at Buttermilk for the next five years, as ESPN and Aspen Skiing Co. announced Wednesday during a media kickoff their intention to continue hosting the premier extreme sports event until 2024.
The first Winter X Games was held here in 2002 and at the end of the contract it will have been held at Buttermilk for 23 consecutive years.

Yeah I think this may be a "smaller" X-Games event for sure.
If you look at the venues page on the X-Games Wiki it probably means we are getting more similar to the past Oslo winter X-Games.

Celebrated Square Root Day

Wow that was a let down of a thread. I thought we actually landed the X games and couldn't figure out how we managed to steal it from Aspen.
So we're just getting a little knock off Canada version. Too bad.
Although even the real games aren't half what they used to be in it's prime.

Interesting strategy - I suppose people who don't know any better with think it's cool that we're getting the thing they've seen on their TV guide. Those who know better (ie. the actual target market) may find the obfuscation annoying, but it'll be a distant memory when it actually arrives.
Then again, not sure 'over-promise and under-deliver' is ever the best strategy...especially for a multi-year event. I'll only buy a ticket if Ward Sutherland is the first crash test dummy sent down to the check the math on the big air ramp...

I agree it annoys me more than anything that this was a huge announcement like we landed a huge international event. It’s great that we landed this but it’s still not what everyone thinks it is. There a lot of checkboxes missing:
Why would x games announce extension in Aspen then back track a month later
Why do all the press releases say “canadian rights”
Why is there no rumours or anything on internet about an aspen breakup
Why would ESPN give up production rights to a Canadian company
I am actually a bit dissapointed that it is only winter and not like Oslo where they hold summer and winter events in same city. That would get me more excited then just a stop on the completion tour schedule leading up to Olympics which may cause competitors to skip the event all together if there is no benefit in qualifying.

Not sure if better or worse, but it'll likely be after the Olympics in 2022, which run Feb 4-20. I suppose it will be a fun chance to celebrate some Canadian medalists with stronger name recognition than if it were before the O Games.
