Looks like Mastodon is gaining enough critical mass to be a legitimate replacement. It's Open Source is allowing developers to improve the user interface and introduce add-ons.

Post.news has a pay-for-view model, which has seen many content providers hop on board as early adopters. It has some of the same VC people that are also propping up Musk's Twitter purchase.
Counter Social has a sketchy anonymous hacker founder, while Tribel is a product of the Occupy Democrats group.
Of course there's Gab, Parler and Truth Social.... if that floats your boat, but I don't see a business model for them now that Trump et. al are back on Twitter.

Mastadon still seems utterly dead and boring in comparison. I don't really see 2.5 million users as a competitive critical mass. I keep trying it out, but it's just utterly lacking in vibrancy comparatively. Maybe it gets there eventually, but I still don't see it.

Here's the Twitter link for the policy change: https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-an...atforms-policy
I can see trying to increase the friction of people leaving or decreasing people leveraging Twitter to promote their profile somewhere else (though punishing people for this seems odd, I can understand if Zuck came on Twitter saying "hey come to Facebook!", but restricting the users of each platform seems weird other than to try and increase friction for people leaving).
Where it breaks down is what if the actual thing that is being discussed occurred on one of those platforms?
"Did you see what Ye posted on Insta?", except you can't link to it.
"This politician just advocated for death to all dogs on Facebook!", but you can't prove it because a link isn't allowed.

Yeah, my primary use of twitter is as a sports news / live sports reaction source. If sports reporters en masse all move over to Mastadon, I will. But until that happens, I'm staying put...unless Elon literally ends twitter, which seems realistic at this point.

I can see the value in news organizations and corporations having their own Mastodon instances, if only to curb bot replies.

Possibly because it's different enough. Might get added if Twitter ressurects Vines.

That's interesting.. Might be a business opportunity to offer a service of operating and maintaining a Mastadon instance for organizations.
Or even one "media" focused instance.

Definitely a scalable platform.
Rumour has it that Jack Dorsey's Bluesky project is an internet protocol similar to Mastodon. I guess it's a question of who becomes dominant first.

Governments and companies setting up their own instances with accounts for officials or employees would help the platform a lot.

Mastadon should release a tool that auto toots your tweets, so they show up the same on both platforms. It would help build up a following. Plus once Musk found out, he'd be all "New rule..."
