Icon48 Hall of Fame Candidates 2020 - Iginla's First Year

NHL article up this morning on how Iggy is one of the players coming up for eligibility for induction to the Hall of Fame next year.

Quote:
Iginla, the former Calgary Flames captain, is one of the most decorated players in NHL history never to win the Stanley Cup. He finished his 20-season career with 1,300 points (625 goals, 675 assists) in 1,554 games. He is 14th all-time in games played, tied for 16th in goals with Hall of Famer Joe Sakic, 34th in points and ninth in game-winning goals (101). Iginla won the Art Ross Trophy and Rocket Richard Trophy in 2001-02, when he had NHL-leading totals of 96 points and 52 goals. He won the Rocket Richard Trophy again in 2003-04 with 41 goals, tied for the League lead with Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk. He had 12 straight full NHL seasons with 30 or more goals from 2000-14 (excluding the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season). Internationally, Iginla won gold at the Olympics in 2002 and 2010, the IIHF World Championship in 1997, the IIHF World Junior Championship in 1996 and the World Cup of Hockey in 2004.

Hossa and Doan two others who will have eligibility for the first time.

What do you think Iggy's chances are for getting in on the first chance? I think he should get it, but there are other pretty good candidates.

Iginla and Hossa should be locks to get in.

I don't know if Doan will get in immediately. He probably shouldn't get in on his stats alone, but he's the first real Coyotes player to be eligible, so he'll likely get in eventually for that reason.

If they want to induct a Coyote I think Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick both have better cases for inclusion.

I think Iginla should get in, I think Fleury should already be in there.

Boris Mikhailov is a name I don't remember ever hearing before, but based on his write up in the article, he sure sounds like he belongs in the HoF.

Quote:
Boris Mikhailov
Eligibility: 37th year

Aleksander Yakushev's induction in 2018 could pave the way for Mikhailov, who is 75 years old and was the right wing on the Soviet Union's top line with Valeri Kharlamov and Vladimir Petrov. He was the captain of the Soviet national team from 1972-80. He won Olympic gold in 1972 and 1976, and gold at the World Championship eight times.

Also, seeing guys like Alfredsson, Brindamour, Fleury, and even Lowe ( ) waiting year after year on the list, it is some pretty stiff competition.

Iggy is better than any of those guys, (Fleury might have had more talent but he has his issues and can't match Iggy's totals either, nor his awards). Alfredsson has been waiting long enough - should get in. Lowe can suck it.

Iggy and Hossa should easily get in first round, they are everything that kids playing hockey should aspire to be.

While Iggy is well known to all of us, I always thought that Hossa coming aboard the Hawks is what really showed them what winning hockey was all about. Imagine what a Hossa type player could do for the Flames right about now. Or Iggy. And why not both?

My guess is that next year sees Iginla, Hossa, Alfredsson, and Fleury inducted as players.

That'd be a good class.

Iginla is a lock. If there was a year that Fleury was going to get in, it was last year. Don't like his chances this year.

It would be cool to see Fleury and Iginla go in during the same year.

The weird inclusion is this year with Zubov. I liked him, I thought that he was a great player, but pretty, pretttty boarderliney.

The only standouts for next year are Iginla as a no-brainer, Hossa as should get in sometime, and Theo as great player who inspired every kid under 6 feet playing in the NHL today.

They don't HAVE to induct a certain amount every year. Take after the MLB. Some years they just go noop, and induct one guy.

Iggy will be a first ballot HOFer and it will be awesome. First Flames player since Lanny IMO (there have been many others who have played for the Flames -- MacInnis, Mullen, Gilmour, etc -- but they were only associated with the Flames for part of their careers).

Lanny was only associated with the Flames for just less than half his NHL career...

One OT Game 6 goal away from the NHL 100 Best All-Time list (it's a joke that he didn't make it without that goal, tbh).
