Default Matthew Tkachuk...

New contract. Highest paid Flame. Misses training camp. Leads the team in points.

Still only 21 years old.

The franchise player in my opinion. Last guy I would trade and next guy I would give the C to

I still think he can score 50 goals in a season.

I’m not sure why the thread but Matthew impressed me last night. He was focused and leading instead of following.

The one thing I noticed is after all 3 goals he scored there was more of a business like mindset and not overly enthusiastic or anything. Part of the reasoning is I think the Flames played a mediocre game but his 2 goals and the shootout goal were crucial

Might be getting ahead of myself but I think he make's Gaudreau expendable when his contract expires.

Too much money on wingers and trading him could restock the cupboards with Gio possibly loosing a step.

Get us a center and rebrand the team.

My favourite part of his game last night was watching him on the bench after his first goal. People were tapping him, and he was just like, “yeah whatever, just doing my job, no biggie.”

That’s a guy that people like to follow.

I really think there really is something to this belief.

He has been deferring to the big guys on the club to lead, but i think he is starting to understand that he IS one of those guys and his contract reflects that.

I expect him to only get better and better...even with his "poor skating abilities". (Simply the worst take through the whole hold out)...people were wanting the guy traded cause he was "slow".

You don't have to be a fast skater to succeed in this game. You need to be average speed, strong on your skates (which he is in spades), but most importantly you have to be hockey smart. Again he may be the most intelligent guy hockey wise on the entire team.

If not already, he will be the face of the club (one that the opposition and their fans detest...good!) and the next captain of it as well.

He is going to be a very special player IMO.

Yeah, but is he a top 3 player on the team?

Obviously I think so but others don't seem to.

His interview between periods (after the second I think) was great. He was pissed at their play. And it sounded just like Gio did after the game.

I didn't think he was C material because of his yapping and the S-disturbing he does, but maybe he's going to grow into it.

I guess there is an argument to be made but at this point its splitting hairs.

He will be soon if he isnt now.

He most certainly top 5 though.

Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Giordano and Matthew. Place them in any order but those are the 5.

Imagine what he could accomplish if he didn't have to wait around for one of Frolik's 'on' nights. It was posted by someone else in the gamethread, but I think that this team won't really see championship potential until pairs are set that match the abilities of the players and bring the most out of them.

Bolded are pairs, others are interchangable :

Tkachuk-Monahan-Mangiapane
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Bennett
Lucic-Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Ryan-Reider

Overloading the top line, and leaving Tkachuk out to dry offensively is a losing strategy. The answer is in the room, and the name of the answer is Peters.

That first line is slow but I do like spreading the offensive skill level out some more.

I 100% agree with this, but I think it highlights the need for 1 more top 6 forward. I like mangi but hes a middle 6 guy!

And let it stick for more than 1 period (at least a couple of games).

I’d like to see...

Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Gaudreau-Monahan-Bennett
Lucic-Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Ryan-Czarnik(when healthy)/Reider

Top two lines can play equal time and match up would depend on who’s playing well atm

Theres gotta be a Matthew frickin Tkachuk thread that could have been bumped (thats the point of them). No problems with this one, but thats what those 'frickin' threads are for.

Isn't a middle six guy also a top six guy depending on lines 3 versus 2?
Seriously, I think you can pick one guy out of almost every top six on a given team that's playing a bit over his level. The Flames didn't hurt for production last year, with Frolik in that spot for the most part.

It sure would have helped if Bennett reflected his draft position. Even as a winger.
