As a name, I think Atlético Ottawa matches Real Salt Lake for outright stupidity. It's just silly shoe-horning Spanish naming conventions into areas with no Spanish culture whatsoever.
However, unlike Real Salt Lake, Atlético Ottawa actually has a logical argument given the expected ownership.
But on name alone, Atlético Ottawa would be the worst of a pretty bad pile of team names in the CPL.

Could they just revive the Ottawa Fury name and branding? I think it was rather lame, personally.

If I had to rank the names I would put them in this order:
Good
York 9
Pacific FC
HFX Wanderers
Bad
Cavalry FC ( really only because of the fact it sounds a little like Calgary, and they play in a horse paddock.
FC Edmonton ( Football Club Edmonton makes no sense!)
Athletico Ottawa ( Atleast it it better the Fury).
Forge FC ( I like economic names)
Valour FC ( lol wut?)

No Miami FC owns the team branding rights.

I'd say the only "good" name is Pacific FC. Replace HFX with Halifax and I'd put them on that tier. York 9 is not great - nothing wrong with just doing "York FC" or something, the "9" makes it gimmicky.
So, do we use "Ottletico" or "AtleticO" as the unofficial name for Ottawa?

Halifax Wanderers is the only good name in the CPL. FC Edmonton is second. And that says a lot about how bad the rest are. York 9 is uninspired.
The rest of them are all bad because they obfuscate where the teams play while also feeling like names some suit high up in an ivory tower in Toronto would come up with after spending five minutes reading each city's Wikipedia article. Cavalry, Valour and Forge are all trite and forced, while Pacific is utterly meaningless.

Well let me be the first to say it.
I hope that the only games Ottawa wins are against Edmonton and Hamilton.
I hope that we beat them every game, and it is never even close.

I hope that this new ownership group puts more effort into the team than OSEG did. If OSEG has any say over and above being the landlord of the stadium it will not go well.

Granted I know very little about soccer, but I'm kind of shocked that "Cavalry" is so maligned. I thought it was sweet, especially given where they play. Am I mental?

I like it, it's just a little cheesy for me. The horse analogy is cool because of the venue, there is a little bit of historical appeal, and it is a bit of a homonym. That said, I think that it sounds forced and kinda Micky Mouse. Likewise, (and this is a completely personal view), I don't like the military theme. Mostly because the history of the Cavalry in southern Alberta is complicated one, with many historical actions that should not be celebrated, especially those that revolve around violence towards the Blackfoot after treaty.
That said, the name of the team is pretty low on my list of concerns when cheering, and I am happy to be a seasons ticket holder and to say that I am a Cavalry FC fan.

Something along those lines.
That said, Cavalry FC is a fine name given that it is the direction the league has taken.
What would you name them?

My issue with the name is that supporters explicitly told the league to not fake an identity, and they completely ignored that feedback and went with this cheesy military theme.
I met with the CSA marketing group in January 2018 to discuss the identity of the club, and ultimately it was an exercise in brushing aside our ideas. The league was insistent on creating "original" names that did not include the city, citing Juventus as an idea. We were asked why we had such attachment to the word Calgary when it wasn't an original name.
In the end, it's Spruce Meadows' club and they can name it however they want. But I will never be a fan of the name. Might as well have just called it Spruce Meadows FC, as it would have made a lot more sense, and would have come with some brand recognition.

I love the name. The rest just come across as too generic and FCFC and SCSC are not great acronyms.
Foothills County Football Club
South Calgary Soccer Club
Southern Alberta United
Calgary City

I like the name. Cool callback to the renowned military units in WWI, and the fact they play in Spruce Meadows is an obvious connection.
I just don't like how our city name is so similar to it, so it makes the whole thing a little silly. Cavalry from Calgary is a little weird.
My bigger problem is the lighting in Spruce Meadows and the west side spectator "stands". If they simply made 4 stands like the East Stand with decent lighting of the pitch, I would have zero issue with the stadium. In fact, I'd love a working man's stadium with no frills but good atmosphere.

I quite like Cavalry. Even mistaking it for the word Calgary isn't a bad thing, since they sound similar and are inherently connected to each other anyways.
Stuff like Real Salt Lake, Houston Dynamo and now 'Atletico Ottawa' just sound contrived here in North America, and seems like an easy cop out. We should establish our own unique naming conventions here.

That's what you have there. In fact the atmosphere can be excellent!

It's not quite there yet. South stands (200s) and east stands (100s) are awesome. The west officers club make it feel like it's not a stadium at all. North stands are passable, but I'd prefer if they were the same as the south stand.
Question: I've never actually made it to a match in time for pre-game ceremony or kickoff. Do they do a horse charge with real horses or anything like that? Would be cool if they did.
