Any city using "empire" is trumpeting some sort of superiority. There are few cities in the world that could pull that off and Edmonton is probably a lot closer to the opposite side of that spectrum.

Edmonton Effluvium would let 'em keep the logo AND be appropriately descriptive.

CFL may be headed to bankruptcy anyway which would make changing the Eskimos name much easier when the league starts up again.

Didn't the Eskimos consult many Inuit bands and find overwhelming support for the name?

I was friends with the GM at the time. The put a lot of time and money into it. I’m convinced that 95% of Inuit love the name but a few vocal ones are the ones raising a stink.

side note I have a family friend that grew up in a far north Inuit community...they refer to themselves as "eskimo" often. My white as a mayonnaise sandwich millennial cousin tried to correct them with "aboriginal". Didn't go over well let me tell you.

Although as we know, sometimes if they refer to themselves a certain way, that doesn't necessarily mean that we can.
There are also certain indigenous groups in Alaska who officially call themselves Eskimo, but there are some Inuit groups which find it extremely offensive.
The Eskimos basically said that they consulted a handful of different groups and some didn't mind it, some did so because there wasn't a "consensus" they kept it.
Here's a recent article on it:

I post this every time this discussion comes up, but a couple of years ago, the President of ITK (basically the organization that collectively represents Inuit across the territories and provinces where they live) has called for Edmonton to change the name:
https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/articl...s_harms_inuit/
So while it may be true that it is a small number of Inuit who are vocally concerned about it, their leadership obviously sees it as an issue that needs to be resolved. When that statement was released, I thought the days were numbered. I can't believe they're hanging onto the name.

Eskimo is not an Inuit word (probably comes from Cree). They should be defined by their own words?

Do you suppose animal-rights activists might one day come after the Stampeders name?

If people can turn words like "thug" and make them racist can't we make other words that might have been racist in the past like "Eskimos" into non-racist words?
