really nice haul for the Rangers IMO. Getting Spooner on top of a 1st and Lindgren gives them quite a few assets to rebuild on the fly.
Boston seemingly going for it. The East race will be interesting to watch.

That seems like a horrible overpayment on face value. Spooner is almost as productive offensively as Nash in his old age and they gave up a 1st and a recent 2nd in order to make that swap and massage the money with the retention and Beleskey?
Boston is going to be regretting this one big time in a couple months.

Best part of the trade is Nash's name on the back of the jersey.

Didn't even think of that. Will they go full name, or just first name alone? This is clearly the most important aspect of this trade.

Why is it stupid?
That Bruins team is looking scarier and scarier and they just made a move that bolsters their top 6 and it cost them futures that they aren't worried about now with guys like McAvoy making the jump.
Good for Boston ~ they are going all in and you gotta respect that I mean the Leafs almost surely are facing the Bruins in the first round and they just got unquestionably better right now.

Uh, why would you approve? You probably play them in round 1 and this makes them better this year, particularly at even strength. Their biggest problem was being too top-heavy at forward; this results in solid second and third lines to back up the best top line in the NHL. The Leafs now have to answer... they really need a LW to play with Matthews and Nylander at this point. Komarov in that spot is a freaking joke.

I don't know..Rick Nash doesn't scare me. He's good but not a game changer.
Teams trading for rentals is stupid and I hope the Leafs don't do it.
Komarov doesn't play with Matthews and Nylander. Hyman does. And I like him there.
Komarov has been on the 4th line for the last few weeks until Matthews got hurt and they put him back with Kadri and Marleau.

Rick Nash's even strength scoring rate for the past two seasons is the same as John Tavares's and Phil Kessel's. His 5v5 goals per 60 minutes of ice time is slightly ahead of Alex Ovechkin. He's not a primary threat anymore but he clearly makes your second line more dangerous, in terms of pure goal scoring. If you look at his entire Rangers tenure, here's where he ranks in even strength scoring rate.
He's clearly declined since 2012, so he's not THAT good anymore, but he's still a threat. This may not be earth-shaking but it also isn't a small tweak for the Bruins, in my view.
For the past three games Komarov has seen minutes with Matthews and Nylander. Even when it's Hyman, that's not good enough. You may not like rentals, but if you can spend Josh Leivo and a 2nd round pick and make your team deeper and more injury proof for a playoff run while adding experience to the room, you do it. If the price doesn't make sense you don't, but looking at what's available, there are plenty of left wings you could add this year that make the Leafs a much better team for this run and don't cost them a roster player.
There are also LW options available for a higher price that could be a part of your team going forward, like Hoffman, Tatar, Skinner or Galchenyuk.
Unless you just don't think you can beat the Bruins and Lightning, which, fine, they're both going to be favoured in any series against Toronto, but that seems like a defeatist attitude for a pretty good team. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of what they could do if they wanted to acquire a top 4 D.

I think this is great for NY.
Spooner is a very good young player. He scores the equivalent of 46 points / 82 gp. The puck goes in the right direction when he is on the ice. He is 26. His contract is a very reasonable 2.8.
Plus they get a 1st.
They take on Beleskey, but then they get Lindgren and a 7th do do that. Plus, Boston retains 1/2 of Belsekey’s contract so 1.9 M becomes easy buy out territory if they want.
They take 1/2 of Nash’s contract, but he’s a UFA at the end of this season so it barely affects them.
Love it.

I don't think that is a great trade for Boston. If Nash does not deliver in the playoffs and move on in the summer they will miss Spooner. Actually Nash is not such a huge improvement on Spooner at this stage in his career. The exact type of trade I hope we never see Treliving pull off as a buyer.

Right now, he is. Going forward, probably not, but that's what rentals are for. They're taking their shot.

Seems about fair when you consider half of Beleskey is off the books now too. Puts a significantly larger amount of pressure onto the team to win this year though, and the East isn't going to be a cakewalk.
Do we see Spooner flipped before the deadline?
