Default Polish Movie Posters

I was reading movie critic Jim Emerson's Blog today and one of his readers there put up a link to some famous Polish movie posters.

I was not aware of how incredibly awesome they are.

Here's a Guardian.co.uk link that contains a whole bunch of them:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/galle...-film-posters?

And another great link that contains 50 amazing ones:

http://wellmedicated.com/inspiration...s-from-poland/

The author from that second link certainly echoes my thoughts:

"My jaw nearly hit the floor when a coworker introduced me to the wonderful world of Polish film posters a couple of years ago. These conceptual masterpieces put the original American posters to shame every time; they are truly beautiful works of art."

The Poles are really well known for their poster work in the design community. They are probably most known for their Circus posters, although lots of other great event and movie posters are out there too.

I've always liked the story behind the Polish poster for Return of the Jedi. Apparently the artist hadn't seen the film and didn't know the plot, but he was told Darth Vader dies in the end. Assuming that such an iconic character must die in the most incredible way imaginable, the artist could not think of anything that could top Vader's head exploding. So this masterpiece was born:

I've been doing a little background reading about their history/origin today while I browse through those links, and it seems that is a common theme in many cases- the artist has not seen the film, but is told something about it, and perhaps given some still images from the film, and told to draw something up. The results are all over the map, from hilariously literal, to evocative, to confusing, to subime, to pitch perfect.

I somehow skipped over that ROTJ poster while browsing- wow, what a terrific poster!

A Polish friend of mine brought some posters back for me in the early 90s. They're mostly theater posters, but very cool. They all got water damage when my idiot landlord decided that April was a good time to tear the roof off my apartment. I'll never be able to replace them, and I'll never forgive him.
