The thing with comparing this to Johnny is that we also have to pay the western Canadian market tax. Which means over paying to keep players in a city they might not necessarily want to stay in.

So we pay for his ability, then increase that by a percentage to entice him to stay in Calgary.

If Johhny is looking to get paid based on his 99 point season three years ago we are best to move on. Taylor Hall got 4x6 and he's only 4 years removed from a hart trophy.. Recent production matters.

Additionally giving that 8th year to a would be 29 year old should significantly decrease the AAV.
99 point season would be 10M+.....nobody is saying that.

Gaudreau has been far better offensively over his career though look at the numbers

I wish this was done for sign and trade purposes. A Sean for a Sean.

What a stud. I think a lot of people still don't realize how good he is. He's a Bergeron with a higher offensive ceiling. Some analytic sites have had him top 5, top 3 player in the league in the past.

Hometown discount, as he could easily command 7yr/9M+ in the open market.

Pay Johnny. The Flames offense would be so boring without him. Anemic.

Tremendous value for the Flyers.

Svechnikov is probably fair (I think it is too much for a post-ELC contract, but not crazy), but this is tremendous value.

Compare this to Nurse, LOL.

Aaaah, so you ARE allowed to extend your core players the year before they go UFA....

should compare Johnny to other scoring wingers to estimate his next contract, not a Selke winning center

you can bet his agent is looking at Panarin, Marner, Aho

I love Johnny but no way his contract should start with an 8. At most he should be getting $7.5 on a 8 year deal.

Couturier is about 8 months older than Johnny.

I suspect 99% of hockey execs would prefer Couturier...though its obviously apples and oranges.

I don’t know if I would say tremendous. Well deserved for sure since he’s been underpaid ever since he entered the league. This contract takes him from 30-38 though.

The Svechnikov contract covers his 21-29 year old seasons. That is going to be a massive steal.

Everything is tremendous value compared to Nurse.

Yeah it is a fair contract

he hasn't exactly done a lot of winning either...that seems to be what people say about every Flames player

Not a steal or anything though

I didn't notice that it takes him to 38 - that explains a lot. Not the steal that the headline suggests.

Thanks,

Yup I also only just noticed this. It's sure to be a good value deal for a while but that's some serious term.

Yes but top defensive centers tend to age very well, especially if they're durable.

While Couturier is the better player and worth more, he likely took a discount to stay. I don’t see Johnny taking any discount.

Is it a discount, or is it a lower AAV in order to get 8 years?

Probably more of the latter.

I would say market value is 7yr / 9M+ when he hits UFA, so say 7year/9.5M = 66.5M

Current contract is 8yr/7.75 = 62M. So, Flyers get a 38yr old Couturier for -4.5M. They also get a lower cap hit for the important prime years. Yes, it is a discount.
