I guess that would be why he might get a PTO instead of a lucrative contract. Tbf new jersey isn't a very good team either and some players benefit from a change in scenery

Maybe a guy like Erik Gustafson could get a look. The Flames are going to need someone on the back end who can add offence. Even when Sutter was GM, he was rumored to be looking at a one eyed Bryan Berard in 2003, and added Roman Hamrlik to the 05 team that had Phaneuf coming to the roster, and traded for Aucoin when the whole league had soured on the guy. So even a defensive stickler like him seems to like having someone on the backend who can run a PP.

I think the Flames are still looking for a more offensive defenseman to replace the offence they lost in Gio.

Yeah, they have to be looking. Offense from the backend was in the bottom third of the league last year WITH Gio.

Didn't Suter go to Dallas? Parise has been rumoured to NYI.

On further inspection yes, almost a month ago

Did they help the team get where it needs to be? What did the Flames teams these players made achieve exactly?

Why is it always this scenario that gets brought up - "why give the kids a free ticket"?

What exactly is free for an AHL Prospect? The fact they've worked their buts off on a bus in the AHL for 2-3 seasons just hoping to get a sniff?

How about the PTO players that are riding coattails of past success that has long since been extinguished? To me there's your free ticket right there to a team. Most of these guys show up and play hard in camp only to have the body inevitably breakdown or desire to compete hard simply starts to wane.

It would be a free ticket if the kids had zero competition for their job. And some of the kids have spent only a few games in the A (Zary) or only one season (Pelletier). Most PTOs don't get a job, there's no free ticket onto a team there.
