Make sure water pumps are upstream of sewage pumps. If they are both on the coast, the polluted water starts to spread out and can come in your intakes. Also make sure both are connected to your pipe network.

A good tip for starting out is put it on pause. Build out some zones, then unpause. It keeps you from leaking money before people move in and not being able to build the basics like water, power etc.

Has anyone tried building a carbon-copy of Calgary to see how it (poorly) it performs?

Hmm weird. My pump is definitely far away from the drainage center. There sure is a huge-ass black mark on the ocean though haha. Putting it on pause kinda feels like cheating though.

I wonder if my auxiliary water towers are to blame... I'll have to check that out later. Still, it is weird because most of the time water quality is fine, but then all of a sudden everyone starts getting sick.

Man I love this game.

Got this game when it first came out but my laptop can't handle it well enough to bother. Have to wait until I move to set up my desktop again.

Can't wait!

Picked this one up in steam sale, wow am I impressed!

I'm not, however, impressed with my road building abilities. I have what amounts to goat trails running throughout the city.

My first city was the river one, basically a large river separating both sides running down the middle of the map. On either end is a highway so basically what I did to start the game was connect the highways by running new roads directly through the middle of the map right across the river, figured this would create a "spine" of sorts.

I have residential on one side of the river, commercial and industrial on the other.

This is creating huge traffic problems for me. I have basically left one side of this "spine" empty so I could upgrade it to more lanes down the road but trying to create intersections is creating even more problems. I don't get how some traffic moves. I see cars come in off the highway and at the first intersection the come across, they move over to the other side of the spine and leave town.

I think I may nuke and pave and do the "spine" idea again but leave more room on either side to create feeder roads into communities, commercial and industrial zones.

Does every map start with an unconnected highway on two opposite sides of the map? One the one I'm currently playing, you start with a highway on either side of the map where you can seem to start 2 roads right off the hop. Basically there are two lanes coming in on either side, should I be building on both right away or just start one and develop the 2nd one later?

Not sure I'm explaining that part right.....

Here, this may help. This shows the two roads that are built off the highway outside of my "building area". Should I be using both right from the start?

Not every map has two unconnected highway spots on either side, some only have one, but they all have one way incoming and outgoing lanes. Instead of having your two way street connect into the one way highway with a Y, I would carry the highway into your city on two separate one way roads. This should help your traffic problem.

Don't forgot to implement transit. It resolves a lot of traffic issues. Especially with that mod where you can add bus lanes.

Silly question:

In order to build the courthouse unique building, you need at least 50% crime rate. I closed all my police stations and reduced the budget to 50% and it's stuck at 27%. How does one increase crime further?

Pro tip - Instead of killing your good city, start up a brand new city and let it's crime skyrocket. Achievements apply to the entire game, not per city.

Thanks, had no idea. I assumed it had to be the city you wanted to build it in.

The 4% tax one for 20 weeks is even harder. Better to use that on a junk city as well haha.

I actually do that on a really well built up city that has huge income, just don't save it. I did the 4% tax while doing something else you had to wait for like building a billion universities. Then just close your game and don't save.

LOVE this game. It's everything SimCity should have been + more.

Think I have the basics down so going to start looking at mods.

Can't believe how fun this is. Going back to work Wednesday is going to suck

Yep. I had about 4 million bucks and lowered the tax. My 150k city went all the way down to 2,000 residents haha. The bonus was I unlocked the 1000 abandoned buildings unique building. Didn't save, then went back and continued playing.

Will it include bike paths and the ensuing complaints from citizens?

still really enjoying this game. Still suck at roads. Always have a traffic issue somewhere.

It amazes me how there are so many things you can watch. I remember being blown away when I got the underground train system running. Watching all the people filter into the station, hear a train arrive and suddenly TONS of people are pouring out going to their destinations.

I even spent a half hour following busses through going through their route.

Which is the one part of the game that I don't quite like. You start up a new route and the game assigns say 8 buses to that route. It sends them all out at once which is silly as they are all clumped together. First bus is full, second bus has maybe 10 people and buses 3-8 are almost always empty. Wish it would stagger them a bit. I sort of expected traffic to cause some separation but they still mostly all travel together.
