About 10 years ago I was visiting a cousin of mine and her friends (mostly early 20s girls). All of them were "cool" kids, not remotely interested in comic books. They were nice to me but I always felt like a bit of an outsider. They were far more interested in what the hottest nightclub was, than a small pocket of pop culture like comic books. By this time there were quite a few popular superheroes but nothing like we see today. After a long night of drinking and partying, we were hanging out in a car with about 6 people smoking a joint. In the midst of stupid drunk stoner talk they begin talking about superheroes and Black Panther comes up. They start making wisecracks about his name and powers. Finally my urge to correct them overpowers my desire to shut up and pretend I'm cool and I burst out full Sheldon (before that existed) and tell them in an annoyed tone that his name is T'Challa and he's the king of Wakanda. After a brief moment of silence the entire car burst out laughing and for years they've been giving me the gears, shouting "T'Challa from Wakanda" and we all get a laugh about it. Well today I texted my cousin to remind her that T'Challa from Wakanda is about to be the biggest superhero in the world (at least for this weekend).
Anyways, just a stupid story that I would have never guessed at the time that T'Challa from Wakanda would be something that a lot of people are gonna be aware of after this weekend. I can't imagine how much money I would have bet that a Black Panther movie being #1 in the world and pulling in $150M+ on opening weekend was a reality 10 years later.

I’ll wait till people I know see it and let me know their thoughts. Too many times hyped movies disappoint me and I am cheap so I’d rather wait before seeing in theatres I’f needed.
Wow what a movie. It was a great well constructed story, with engaging characters and amazing imagery. This movie is going to be huge , it's probably my favorite film from the MCU. Infinity War can't come soon enough!
Thought I'd check and see if my favorite theatre had any 'good' seats left tonight, and they had plenty for the latest showing. Working nights has some benefits!
I really liked it. Good, solid story. Fantastic action/set pieces. I was pretty impressed with Letitia Wright.

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Disney and Marvel's Black Panther brought in $25.2 million from Thursday night previews, just shy of doubling the $12.7 million brought in by Deadpool. When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it outperformed the $25 million brought in by Captain America: Civil War and is behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron's $27.6 million, making it the second highest preview gross within the franchise.
It was okay. Decent.
The standout part is the villains, better than most Marvel entries of late.
The main one has human motives, doesn't just exist to do an evil laugh and be antagonistic.
So that was refreshing.
Unique tone. Wakanda is cool af.
Soundtrack? Cool af.
Martin Freeman though, why?
Lady Q (you'll know what I mean) and Michonne were great.
CGI rhinos and cars disassembling were kinda eye rollers. Must we make our movies into video games these days? Someone please scale back to practical effects for more things than not. It's just more engaging and less overwhelming visually.
I thought it was a good Marvel movie, but I didn't feel it was particularly special outside of the villain. It's certainly no Dark Knight like some people were claiming at least from my perspective. It was still very much a comic book hero movie - which isn't a bad thing.
Beyond that, I felt a few lines were a bit cringey (Killmonger's last line about preferring to die than to become a captive/slave or whatever), and it seemed really weird to me how willing T'Challa was to kill other Wakandans. Didn't really fit his character to me.

I hope it crushes every box office record because A: It's a damn good movie and B: People will stop saying the phrase Superhero fatigue
