I'd like to think it too but Iraq, Syria Rwanda and thousands of dead americans shot by their partners work mates etc prove otherwise

From totally anecdotal evidence, I'd say it's young men who tend to do get angry, go off the deep end, and do something awful. The Las Vegas shooter was also nothing like that. He was a cold and calculated psychopath, who obviously spent a great deal of time planning this. How many middle aged men actually commit violent crimes though? Most middle aged men (I'm pretty much one now) I know are content eating pizza on their couch.

Hmm...a day or so after the shooting it was reported that a hard drive had been removed. So what gives, a second computer?

Still no motive. I can't help it, but I'm terribly curious as to what the motive was.
Somehow I'm not shocked he had a ton of child porn on his computer. Sick.
There is a sickness in the USA. I doubt it ever gets cured.

Pretty sure there isn't much of a cure for the human condition. As someone else noted, we're pretty rough animals when left to our own devices.

Yeah...that's how.
really good work by the NY times on that video and the one that comes on right after it...the second one has some disturbing footage though.

This may be the closest we will ever find to a motive -- Paddock was another anti-government nut like Timothy McVeigh.

Las Vegas police have fired an officer that froze one floor below the shooter knowing where he was and while it was still happening.
People say they would react one way in situations, but i dont think you know until confronted with such a thing.

I would agree but freezing when he is needed most is a testament on why he shouldn’t be a police officer. Innocent People have died for his inactions

I can't say that I would want to be the guy's partner when stuff goes down.
I am sure he is not a bad guy, but just not cut out for the job. And to be fair, most ordinary people wouldn't be and a good number of people with training as well I bet.

He just had it backwards.
If you're police you can get away with murder of unarmed individuals if you pretend to be scared for your life. What you can't do is be actually scared for your life against armed individuals.

Once he heard the firepower going on above he probably thought there was more than one shooter and certainly big guns, he then looked down at his 9mm glock and said to himself "I think I'll wait a bit"

i would imagine the whole situation must be tough for him to deal with, knowing that perhaps if he would have acted the situation may have played out differently for many people, including himself.
this is not to dimiss the impact of this situation on any of the other responders.

According the article, it was the guy's first day on the job too.
Ya, I'd be cutting him some slack. Probably sounded like Rambo firing off for what would have felt like forever. And first day?
I would have stayed back too. I don't fault the guy one bit.

I guess they could have gone 1 floor up, but then what would they have done? I assume they would have had to wait for a SWAT team to properly breach the door anyways, so the outcome might not have changed.
Perhaps playing knock-knock-who's-there on the hotel room door could have distracted the shooter....?

I think this was the right decision. How many additional people were injured or died because of that officer's inaction? He is supposed to protect and serve and sometimes that does involve life threatening situations. I'm certain the LVPD is probably getting sued and whatnot for his inaction.
It's amazing to me that they knew where the shooter was within minutes and had someone within one floor roughly 5 minutes after the shooting started. He's probably haunted by all the lives that were lost or destroyed because he waited. He didn't hesitate, he waited and it cost lives.
