You would think after the first time it happened the navy would be all "OK, super serious guys. You gotta not hit things. This looks really bad for us."

So we need an "ongoing American Navy sailing into things" thread now?

The US Navy has had 4 serious collisions in the past year. You would think with the all the high-tech gear on board a collision would be the least likely event on a US Navy ship.

Maybe the Soviets had it all wrong, instead of spending billions on listening devices they should have just parked a few ships in the middle of the Atlantic.

Could their navigation system get hacked?

The US Navy and Calgary Transit are going to have to compare notes.

Calgary Transit: People occasionally arent paying attention and get hit by trains...

US Navy: Hold my Beer...

At least Calgary Transit has an excuse. A C-Train can't exactly turn to starboard.

Doesn't make you lose the power of sight, its a huge tanker dead ahead, even at night it's lit up like a small town.

I think North Korea has nothing to worry about.

This is weird, the conspiracy nut in me is wondering about hacking and disabling systems. All the navigation systems are electronic and computer driven now. So maybe they could see it but not change course, or guided in.

But that's far fetched.

And I would think for the possible candidates that might have a sliver of a chance of hacking US Navy ships (ie Russia and China), the advantage is so great that you wouldn't use it unless in a time of war, for fear of tipping off the US to change their systems.

Yeah, I know, and like I said, if I was a conspiracy nut.

But remember the supposed hack of a US AirForce Drone by the Iranians, they didn't save it for a time of war.

I just can't figure out how on a big ocean we get two major collisions in a short period of time. They have navagational radar and sonar, they have the bridge crew and lookouts, they even have computer collision detection and avoidance systems.

Its not like the old days or that they were rolling in heavy seas of a fog bank that blocks radar.

Conspiracy-wise, maybe the US is just steering their ships into random boats at night hoping that eventually, one of them will be from North Korea so they can start something with them.

To be fair, neither can ships this size, at least not in the way that one would intuitively think. The ship the McCain crashed into was 600m long. I'm guessing something that size would have about a two mile turning radius.

I had to check because 600m seemed pretty big. It's actually 223m.

I know they're big and cant stop on a dime, but they're also enormous and in huge bodies of water and should be kilometers away from the next nearest anything.

To put it into perspective, there probably havent been 4 boat collisions on Lake Okanagan this year and theres way more boats in a much smaller space and most of the people operating them are drunk off their asses.

Boats dont tend to need to be close to other boats. Warships even less so.

So WTF?

Yeah, whoops, misread - actually 600 feet, not m.

I actually don't think that's far fetched at all, in fact I think its rather plausible. The Trump election, Ukrainian invasion and Zeus malware has shown just how adept the Russians are at digital warfare, and these examples were only uncovered after the fact. It wouldn't surprise me if they have compromised the US systems in some capacity.

yeah, but do the ships not have people on the bridge scanning the horizon with binoculars?

maybe the russkies swapped out the binoculars with bar-noculars?
