Thumbs up Ongoing Documentary thread

A few of us seem to want this, lets see how this goes.

Hi my name is Thor and I am a documentary addict, and I love to discuss and review what is out there and hopefully find some gems to watch from others here.

I'll try to just review what I watch in a particular week or so and go from there.

PBS new show "Constitution USA" Episode 1:

Looks to be a promising series, episode one hints and some of the more controversial topics they will address, plus it will at least delve deep into what are the common misconceptions and lack of understanding of this amazing document. The host seems just right for this task, as it can be a volatile topic with some people. 6/10

BBC This world - The Mafia's Secret Bunkers

Centered around the Ndrangheta mafia in Calabria Italy, this show goes into how this new and very powerul mafia exists and operates in a very remote area of Italy. Also touches a bit on the crackdowns in Sicily with la cosanostra which left the void for this new mafia to gain power. 6/10

BBC The Fantastic Mr Feynman

If you haven't read his book, DO IT, this documentary is very well done and for any science nerds its a must see. Truly one of the most amazing minds in science but more importantly one of the best all time at communicating science to a broader audience. 8/10

Couple of my favourites...

Devils Playground

Chronicling the Amish practice of teens entering Rumspringa, where they act like "normal" westerners and decide whether they want to join the Amish church.

Your Father's Murderer: A letter to Zachary

Warning, if you are a father, you will be affected by this.

I don't even have kids and I was devastated by this doc.

The filmmaker released a followup video recently. It gives some resolution to questions raised in the film.

I used a spoiler tag because the thumbnail might give away part of the story.

Spoiler!

The Fog of War

A retrospective documentary/interview with Robert McNamara. This man lived a very interesting life in very interesting times. I never knew he was president of the Ford Motor Company until watching this. The man is very intelligent and shockingly honest about his successes and failures. I think a lot can be learned from his experiences and this film in particular. Also, a particular treat of the film is music by Philip Glass.

- you can watch the entire thing at the link. It's an HBO doc that's been uploaded to Vimeo (can't seem to embed it), that's aired already. I know they re-air it periodically.

Watched this last night, its part of a series including UFOs, 7/7 London bombings and 9/11. Watched the UFO and Creationism ones, not a bad little series that shows just how hard it is for facts to change the minds of people convinced of what they believe.

The History Of The Amen Break

An in depth look at the most important drum break of all time. It's the most sampled six-seconds of music in history.

Pump Up The Volume

A BBC documentary about the invention and evolution of House music from it's humble beginnings in Chicago in the early 80's to how it changed British mainstream culture forever.

Standing In the Shadows Of Motown

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a music documentary about the Funk Brothers, the unrecognised and uncredited musical backbone who played on Motowns' recordings right from 1959 up to 1972. This group of studio musicians played on more #1 hit songs than The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Elvis combined.

Can anyone recommend any documentaries available on Netflix? I see there's a lot of them but a recommendation of a good one would be appreciated as I don't even know where to start. Thanks.

I've hyped this one in the movie thread before - In the Shadow of the Moon. It's about the Apollo program. and never mind favourite documentaries, this is one of my favourite movies period.

"Devils Playground" was one of the films at the 2003 Calgary International Film Festival. I remember that film distinctly. A must-watch for that liked the recent "Breaking Amish" TV Series.

"Fog of War" also won best documentary in 2003 I believe. It's almost a seminal watch for political science students and/or history buffs.

One more for foodies: "Jiro Dreams of Sushi." The filmmaking style is average at best, but the amazing story of 90-year old Jiro is something that was really captivating to watch - the sheer amount of detail and finesse he places on ordinary things and the amount of psychology he uses in serving sushi is really something else.

BBC Panorama is pretty good, they just released another documentary where they go into North Korea

They have done two on scientology which are really good too. Make sure to watch them in order though as the second one is a follow up to the first.
