Yeah... obviously his parents wrote that. Which brings up the issue of whether it's ethical to use your kids as vehicles for political statements when they're not themselves old enough to understand the nuances of political disagreement. That bugs the hell out of me when I see it, usually from pro-lifers - babies with signs saying they could have been murdered in the womb and so on.

This particular issue might get a pass considering that, first, the kids holding the signs are themselves directly affected by the issue under discussion, and second, even if they're not old enough to form independent political opinions, presumably they are old enough to want to not be shot while at school. Still, probably best to let them write their own signs.

That one is funny though.

I think any kid over 12 is probably reasonably able to make an informed choice on whether or not to protest and could likely come up with those signs.

Below that it bothers me even if they have a vested interest in the point being argued.

That's also a dumb comparative as there's a good reason for not bringing peanut butter to school.

This is the Parkland Student's manifesto

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ricas-gun-laws

It all sounds reasonable to me but I don't live in gun culture USA.

Wait... you're saying there is a good reason for bringing guns to school?

I honestly can't think of a good reason for that kid to have a gun.

Schools are already designated as gun free zones under federal law. Taking one onto school grounds (even without malicious intent) is an offense and has been since the 90s. It was George H. W. Bush who signed it into law.

Pretty clear that intent of the sign was to try to impart that it is not illegal to bring a firearm to a school, and using a small child to deliver that message makes that much worse.

Mostly though today it was a youth movement. In some of the marches I saw, people over 25 were kept separate.

After watching some of the speeches I gotta say.....there are a lot of articulate, smart, energetic young people out there. Some pretty emotional and inspirational things said today. Great to see.

I hope they keep the momentum going for the next few years until some of those NRA-friendly politicians are gone and something will actually get done in that country. Banning bump stocks and raising purchase age sounds neat and all but it's just nibbling around the edges. The average citizen doesn't need and shouldn't have assault style guns. Start there and see what happens. Clearly doing nothing isn't working. Do something substantial and hopefully some of these mass shootings will at least slow down. At least these kids are giving me some hope for that country.

yeah, some of those speeches were pretty impressive again.

so impressive in fact that I sadly wouldn't be surprised if they were some boneheaded "those are hired actors" claims from certain people again.

Until both sides are will to come to the table and engage in fact and evidence based discussions, nothing will happen.

Using made up terms to try and instill fear or ignore the laws as they exist isn’t the way to effect change. Once people realize that, maybe there can be a real discussion

“Assault style weapons”

Why not use “semi-automatic rifle”?

It’s even started to creep into Canadian debates. The anti-gun crowd is now using “assault style sporting rifle” since they can’t get away with “assault weapons”
