I remember having conversations with friends in junior high about whether the Flames should keep Iginla or Bure and talks were fairly split. Flash and name recognition probably helped Bure, but there's no doubt he was part of the polish on that turd that brought me to the rink despite the stink. That's my vote.

When Calgarypuck first got going (pre kids) I was accredited and in the dressing room with media doing interviews.
One night Bure comes out and a trio of us surround him, with one guy asking questions. It hit me that Bure was taller than I thought as he was pretty close to my height (6'0"). I looked down and he had a pair of Gene Simmons boots on (minus the devil head) boosting his height about three inches.
The other Bure story I heard at the time ... can't speak to the validity of this one.
The Flames had a family night at Melrose ... players and wives and girl friends with a big buffet on the team. Bure showed up late, got a to go box, filled it an left.

Any Flames player that shreds an Oilers jersey with his skates in the penalty box after a line brawl has my vote. To my recollection, there’s only been 1 (to date).

I couldn't stand Bure as a player.
He could be great...at times. When he decided that he wanted to be and would get engaged.
However more times than not he was selfish/disinterested, soft and a tire fire defensively.
He was not alone in the latter part of that description, but he was definitely one of the bigger parts. I know he wasn't overly popular with his teammates either.

Bure was talented, but very much in the same mold as Huselius, at times, on fire, other times putird and disinterested. Married to Candace Cameron was a bigger deal at the time.
Our first year of season tickets, was his second year with the Flames. He hit about 8 posts iirc, only Tony Amonte, a few years later, seemed to hit more.
Dennis Lambert, the one who Iginla squared off in the Ducks brawl, felt the wrath of Petr when with Atlanta.
Risebrough was a hardass for sure, not a great fighter but a hardass. But he gets it 100 times out of 100 for shredding McSorely's Oiler jersey in the penalty box after this scrum, promting Sather to send the bill for a new jersey to the Flames.

I always felt that gave them the confidence they needed going into the playoff series not that long thereafter
There's a few clips of that game in this video.
This is an essential video for any Flames fan to watch, goes through the 1986 season, though mainly the playoffs. The presser for Mullens trade in here, of course the playoffs. The oft forgotten sweeping of the Jets.
Don Whitman's creation of the "C of Red" in his comment after Game 2 in Edmonton as well.

I have no idea how you guys remember specific games from back then as in my memory, every game had a line brawl or 3 and at the very least a dozen majors for fighting.
Good stuff though.
And Baxter...what was goin on at the end of that clip? LOL...
Look at all those penalties and power play goals. 8 fighting majors but there must be a typo, they have Hunter with a double fighting major, I don't think that is possible?
To me, the McDonald and Risebrough trades along with hiring Bob Johnson as the coach were the three most important moves that Fletcher made in the early days to help establish a new identity for the team in Calgary and move the franchise toward legitimacy.
