Nothing wrong with taking a shot on a player when it's free, but hard to get excited about a 24 year old prospect with no pro experience.

None of those examples to what I’m saying are from NCAA.

I know it’s a longtime ago and things have changed a lot...but the Flames acquired 3 guys who were pretty much in the same boat, who ended up being major cogs in their 89 Cup win.

Joel Otto, Colin Patterson and Jamie Macoun.

Bottom line with college UFAs....you never know but if your scouts believe in them, you got to be in it.

Why are these players never right handed when I check out their bio?

This organizations lack of RH talent pisses me off to no end.

True.

It was pretty innovative at the time and the university system was often overlooked as a source of talent.

Yeah that was so disappointing how he didn't amount to anything, after we stole an Edmontonian right out from under the Oilers noses. Oilers fans were so sure they'd get him and he'd be a stud, that would've been years of chirping Oilers fans about that if he turned into what they thought he'd be.

The Flames still have Foo's rights if he ever becomes a more viable option in the KHL. The Oilers might do something similar with Anton Slepyshev this summer.

Adding D is an organizational need, even if it's for Stockton.

Lerby will be coming over next season as well.

You never said NCAA in your post. You just said signings. But it’s not really much different anyway. College players who are undrafted versus minors or Euro league players? What’s the distinction?

Because the post is about an NCAA player so I was referencing the topic in which I’m posting in. As if I’m not aware that GIo was undrafted and signed as a UFA.

I don't know why there are always people that think this is a waste of time. Yes there is low probability of the player making the NHL or being an impact player but there is low cost. And it does happen.
Notable NCAA free agent signings
Torey Krug
Tyler Bozak
Dan DeKeyser
Brandon Tanev
Chris Tanev
Jason Garrison
Andy Greene
Alex Iafollo
Ben Lovejoy
Neal Pionk
Matt Read
Conor Sheary
Nate Schmidt
Trevor Van Reimsdyk

I mean that's not a bad list of quality NHLers. It seems like dmen have a better chance probably because they develop later?

You're right Jiri that's not a bad list, it's a dang good list

Look at all those good NHL defensemen. You could add Colton's brother Tucker Poolman to the list too

He was a fifth round Jets pick.

Foo's rights expire next year. So when his KHL deal is done, he's a UFA.

Forgot about that. Is there a specific reason in the CBA why Foo's rights expire Jun 30 2021 while a guy like Karnaukhov is on the Flames' reserve list indefinitely? Does it have something to do with their respective N.A. pro history?

Karnaukhov was a drafted player without a contract, so it reverts back to the draft UFA rules. Flames hold his rights for-ever.

Foo had a contract and so the rules revert back to "regular" UFA rules. He's a UFA after he's 27.

I think Kenney Morrison was the last free agent defenceman out US college ranks.

Still, you can't hit a bullseye without a dart.
