Flames 88-89 Throwback time... A quarantine project: Oh boy, a pack of hockey cards!

What's this?

A pack of hockey cards? Here on a hockey internet forum?

... Let me explain.

I miss hockey cards so much! They remind me of my childhood, collecting books and books of cards, sorting them by team and alphabetically by player name and numerically by jersey number and historically by jersey design and whole bunch of things.

I used to have a ton of fun on my computer "designing" hockey cards, usually in MS Paint. Aaaand... they weren't great. But I had a ton of fun writing blurbs on the back and putting in all the stats and picking cool photos. I had a heck of a time. I'm out of town right now but when I get back, I'll take a look to see if I can find any of my old (terrible) creations. Seriously, I printed them and cut them out and everything.

These days, I like to think I'm a bit of a better designer than I used to be. So... I'm introducing Calgarypuck 2019-20 Series 1, our site's own set of Calgary Flames hockey cards. I designed a series of dozens of hockey cards and each day, I'll post a new one here, totally at random. It'll be like opening a new pack, every day.

These "cards" were are all rendered actual size, 2.5" x 3.5". I hope you all like them. It's been a fun way to pass time in social distancing quarantine, at the very least.

Card #1: Zac Rinaldo

Well this is fun!

When I was a kid I did a team set of hand-drawn cards. Those would be interesting to find again

Thanks for content - I think I already read the internet once!

Very cool idea. I was a huge collector as a kid and still cherish a lot of those sets. I am sucker for anything Upper Deck put out between 1991 and their 1994 series. To me, those are ideal templates for what a hockey card should look like.

IMO, this is a perfect hockey card. Would love to see 2020 in the 1994 UP template.

The first card is Zac Rinaldo? Not exactly 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr...

J/K. Nice job Scorp.

Hmmmm no. But there might be some quirky cards coming out soon. Haven't made that decision just yet.

Looks great! Good job! Any copyright issues using the photos? Is it better to list stats from start to current year (top to bottom)?

You cannot print a hockey card with any NHL logos without permission from the NHL/NHLPA, with the exception of some cards with a print run of 1 (I think they may qualify as unique photos that are not covered).

Upper Deck has an exclusive license to NHL hockey cards now. Topps has the exclusive for MLB. Panini for NBA and NFL.

There are a few sports card companies who make unlicensed cards and airbrush out jersey logos. Leaf trading cards is an example of an unlicensed company. ITG used to do it to.

The photos I'm using are all from Getty. I don't have a license for them but given that I'm not using them for any commercial purposes, I'm not terribly worried about it. It's just a bit of fun and a totally amateur enterprise.

As far as the chronological order of stats — I'm not sure if there's a tried-and-true order, I just picked the order I thought looked nicest but it's something that can very easily be reversed.

Thanks for the kind words. Card #2 will be up later today, tell all your friends and buddies.

When these are all complete and posted, I might get a couple of high-quality sets made at a printing shop. Due to licensing agreements involving Upper Deck, Getty Images, the NHL, and the NHLPA, I definitely couldn't sell them, but maybe I'll give away a couple sets.

If that's something anybody would be interested in, let me know and maybe I'll send you a couple. I don't know how it would work, haven't really thought it through, but we'll see.
