Why not scale down all the numbers in the condition to 85% of what they were originally agreed upon?

- Neal has to score at least 17.8 goals
- Lucic has to score at least 8.5 fewer goals

Neal has 19, Lucic has 8. That's a difference of 11.

Seems fair to me. But I'm not the NHL.

I assume the deal was written that the third round pick would transfer if 21 goals were scored. They weren’t. It’s really that simple.

If the Flames wanted to place a contingency on the proration based on games played, they could have suggested it. But they presumably didn’t, so as a matter of contract law, it’s a done deal.

If he had scored 11 goals in 41 games, should the pick pass? What’s the dividing line?

I think it's a little audacious to say there's no chance the league looks into this four posts after a TSN link that says they will possibly look at it, Rando

If he missed substantial time to injury, that's a completely different circumstance. But the whole league shut down for non-hockey-related reasons, 85% of the way through the season. That's a completely unique scenario that needs to be considered when dealing with these types of trades and bonuses.

Fully seemed like a Seravelli special there. Just media talk.

Also brought up compensatory picks as a possible solution to some of these conditional trades. Which I would assume that mean the Oilers get to keep their 3rd and league gives the Flames another pick.
That would be ridiculous too.

How do we know Lucic wouldn't have scored 6 goals in the last dozen games?

You can't pro-rate hockey stats. They don't occur consistently enough.

It looks like those of us advocating to sell sell sell at the deadline (Brodie, etc.) were almost certainly 100% correct.

LOL Canucks.

Because he's 31 year old Milan Lucic.

I could see a compliance buyout or two allowed with the hit the cap is gonna take...this debate might not go on as long as we first thought

not sure why people think the flames should be compensated because of league shutdown? Maybe i'm in the minority, but i don't think Neal would have gotten those 2 goals if they had played all the games. Neal was playing on the 4th line and getting 2nd PP time. Considering the Oilers for the most part, they just use their 1st pp unit, it was looking bleak.

Also wasn't one of the conditions that he also had to have out scored Lucic by 10? Think there was just as much chance, if not better chance, Lucic got to 11 before Neal got to 21.

Bottom line on the trade, Lucic had more points than Neal had for us last year playing the same role. Lucic was better in ever measurable statistic, and that was with the team playing no where near as well as they did last year. Would do trade again.

I see this too, and a Lucic buyout is cheaper than a Neal buyout.

If Lucic is bought out, I'd actually love to seem him re-signed for 2 million x 3 years. I doubt he'd stick around though. He's probably heading back to the West Coast in the event of a buyout.

The last round of compliance buyouts stopped teams from re-signing the players they bought out.

Ken Holland says his understanding is that the Oilers will keep the conditional 3rd round draft pick.

Can't really complain as the conditions weren't met end of story.

He was injured and playing poorly. Probably wasn't going to hit the total anyway

I just don't see it as that cut and dry, nor have others that don't reside in Calgary or Edmonton.

If it's prorated I'd be pissed if I was an Oiler fan, but as a Calgary fan the season never completed and the number of games weren't met to close the book.

So I don't think people are or were complaining, but I'll choose to hang on to a little more hope than yourself!

Went looking for an article on the Athletic that was out ten days ago ... highlighted the 5 or so most contentious conditional trades, and this one was on the list.

2. The James Neal-Milan Lucic trade
Got to admit, this one is so chaotic it is downright fun. Though whoever will be responsible for resolving it would probably beg to differ.

I just don't see how you can prorate these things. To me it's done if the season is considered over. No draft pick changing hands. I'd be happy if Calgary gets something more out of it though.
