Only remotely palatable if Lucic agrees to not carry his NMC over. Being forced to protect him in the expansion draft would be brutal.

Could you clarify what this source shared? Like, did they say that Lucic would be willing to waive? Has been asked to waive? Being open to it is one thing and I think has already been reported, it’s quite another if there have been discussions about it on Calgary’s end.

I don’t like the amount of smoke building up around this. The only way it even comes close to working is if Edmonton retains a huge amount of money AND the NMC is waived for expansion.

Chances that Seattle takes him in the expansion draft are slim and none.

Taking on that buffalo under any circumstance is a terrible idea.

There has been so much smoke around this rumour for so long I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

JP, Lucic, and a 1st in 2020 and a 2nd in 2021 for Bennett and Neal.

From the comments... hmmmm... 2020 1st could be Lafanierre

It is not about Seattle taking him it is about being forced to protect him. I doubt Seattle would take him either but if the Flames are forced to protect him due to his NMC it is crippling.

Today they have Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Lindholm, Backlund, Bennett, Dube to protect and likely they will add another forward in the next couple of years to protect. Can’t waste a spot on a 30 something Lucic

So outside of re-signings of Brodie/Hamonic or UFA signings, Seattle's pretty much looking at the unprotected Bennett/Dube vs Andersson/Kylington right? Even with Lucic being protected, I think Seattle would rather the unprotected defenseman over the forward. Flames might be an option to go the 8 skater route as is, but that leaves players like Backlund exposed.

Looks like it is a done deal. What a terrible move by the Flames. got rid of a bad contract for a worse one. if there is no retained salary we just got worse as a hockey team.

Lucic makes Neal look quick, has had a few rumoured off ice run ins, and has been sliding for a longer time period.

Then you get into can't buy out and a full nmc as you said.
Whoops!

But there is retained salary, and I don't think you could reasonably claim that Neal was a better player than Lucic last season. They're the same age, and Lucic came a bit cheaper. The NMC is the item of most concern in all of this, but I don't think it has made us a worse hockey team this upcoming season no matter how you choose to look at it.

When was the last time a player turned around their career in Edmonton? I have extreme doubts that Neal will magically turn it around in the suckhole. Much better chance that Lucic shakes off a little bit of suck getting out of there. Add the fact that he will actually punch someone (unlike neal) and it could be a net benefit.

I like it if there is retained salary. Not sure the no movement clause matters if the idea is him being plucked in the expansion draft. No way Seattle takes him. Not sure who else would take him after he scores 8 total goals over 2 years in Calgary.

No, definitely not the idea that Seattle would take him, just that we wouldn't have to waste a protection spot on him. If we do, the trade is a definite loss but I am confident that will not be the case.

So the first trade has happened and tentatively the roster looks like:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Lucic - Ryan - Bennett
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Dube
Czarnik, Quine

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Andersson
Kylington - Stone
Yelesin

Rittich
Talbot

Bolded are potential players for trade and underlined/italicized are the remaining RFA’s

What needs to happen still? Who should we be targeting to upgrade?

I think it is a given that Frolik will move and probably Brodie as well for cap reasons.
