Thumbs up (GT)-2018 Academy Awards

The 90th edition of the Oscars are tonight. I'm a little upset at the absence of a few nominees, but what can you do. Categories and nominees are listed below, my guesses are in bold. I'm abstaining from foreign film/documentary/short films because I just didn't get a chance to watch any this year.

Visual Effects
Star Wars-The Last Jedi
Blade Runner 2049
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
War for the Planet of the Apes
Kong: Skull Island

Sound Editing/Sound Mixing (combining the categories because I think having separate awards in this category is B.S., and the nominees are all exactly the same, and it's rare for a movie to win in one category and not the other)

I saw everything this year up for a major award, absolute favorites were The Florida Project, Disaster Artist and The Shape of Water. All absolutely incredible.

While I did enjoy Phantom Thread it was by far my least favorite Day Lewis or PT Anderson movie. Wasn't crazy about 3 Billboards either.

Gary Oldman has to win tonight.

Shape of Water seemed like it was made to pander to the Academy so it will likely win BP. Hoping for Ladybird or Phantom thread though. Dunkirk was far and away the best film of the year Imo, but won't win because it glorifies war.

I should get paid to do this.

Production Design, my first miss. There goes my perfect run. It's like trying to pick a perfect bracket in March Madness. Nearly impossible.

Wow...must be a lot of Lakers fans on the Academy to give Kobe an award.

My wife saw the shorts and said that Dear Basketball was by far the weakest of the group. Pretty dissappointing.

I totally loved 3 Billboards but due to the many language issues ( like the C word used many times) I think it looses to the Shape of Water for BP, can't see anyone beat Frances McDormand though, great performance.

When will they just nominate 10 (or fewer) people as Best Performer in a Lead Role/Supporting Role? Eliminate the gender categories. Or do they need to?
Would make it harder to win for sure.
But would shorten the show as well.

I never understood the fascination with Hollywood. I mean I watch movies and tv and what not but to watch the oscars or entertainment tonight.... just don’t get it. My fiancé wanted to watch but luckily I convinced her otherwise.

Women would stop being nominated in the lead actor/actress category as the nature of movies today rarely have women in that role. Though men might get squeezed out in the supporting role as most Oscar bare movies have a women supporting a man.

It would also be a yearly controversy of not enough x gender in each category. Better to keep separate

Same here. 'Forced' to watch it at work (it's the only thing showing...I lobbyed to get the TV turned back to 'Liar, liar' so I could keep watching that, but was overruled...)

It may just be that the Oscars and I don't agree on what a 'good' movie is. I have seen 3 movies, total, out of Cali's list of nominations, and have absolutely no desire whatsoever to see any of them. Most of them look, to me, insufferably boring. But that's my particular taste in movies/tv entertainment.

I like what I like what I like...and I don't care if that wins awards, or the cast/crew involved win awards, none of that matters to me. But it apparently does to a lot of people.

I wonder about it, but try not to rain on their parade while they enjoy it.
