Mentioned it in the trailers thread but I'm pretty amazed that in this day and age, a sequel to a relatively big hit can be made and the public doesn't really know about it. There were rumours for years that it was going to happen eventually but for the trailer to drop last night and a release a mere two months away. Pretty awesome.

Everything I've read says that this is a sequel in "spirit" only. I'm assuming it takes place in the same universe?
The first one was a found footage Godzilla type movie. I was under the impression that this is a whole-movie-takes-place-in-one-room type deals. Think Hateful Eight except instead of a blizzard there has been a chemical attack...

We don't know if the creature in the last movie was killed at all. Abrams said he was, but at the end of the movie there's an audio clip that says "Its still alive".
Maybe the American's eventually had to go full nuclear on it, and Goodman was a crazy guy with a bomb shelter.
The other thing that was really intriguing was that the original monster was a newborn. What if a full grown one came out of the ocean?
That could explain the quake.
As well we had those parasites running around exploding people, what if they became an infestation.
Or it could just be a chemical spill go wrong, maybe the soft drink that they were marketing which was rumored to come from the ocean floor had an adverse effect on the people drinking it.

J.J. Abrams is calling it a "blood relative" to the first one so it sounds like it's not a true sequel but as you said takes place in the same universe.
