At least, I'm praying it is.

A fun memory to distract from the worst of humanity that resulted in this thread...

Weaponizing human natures need to have "special" or "superior" information and aiming this squarely at families who have lost children in a despicable act, is truly one of the most disgusting things any individual with any platform can do.

Wow, only ordered to pay $4.1M in damages?

That's disappointing.

The Jury has not decided on punitive damages yet.

For those that think Jones is a hero in search of the truth, remember this:

During a heated divorce proceeding, Alex Jones's lawyer insisted the bombastic radio jock who spins conspiracy theories is just 'playing a character.'

New York (CNN Business)Right-wing talk show host Alex Jones will have to pay the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim a little more than $4 million in compensatory damages, a jury decided Thursday, capping a stunning and dramatic case that showcased for the public the real-world harm inflicted by viral conspiracy theories.

The award from the jury was far less than what the plaintiffs, Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin, had asked for. At the start of the trial, attorneys for Lewis and Heslin asked the jury to award their clients $150 million in compensatory damages.

You may need to sit down to before you hear this: people will say whatever it takes in court to get out of trouble.

A lawyer shall not knowingly: offer evidence that the lawyer knows to be false.

He has lost 3 cases, 2 in Texas and one in Conneticut. All by default judgement, as he didnt provide a defense in any of them.

This case with 4 mill plus the comp damages is for one set of parents. Not sure when the next two are set for. I believe the 150 mill number ive seen is for all three cases.

This is a much more accurate statement. Most people have some semblance of ethics, that you believe Jones is justified in lying speaks to your own lack of these.

But 'knows' allows a fair amount of leeway, 'Your honour my client informs me' is lawyer shorthand for 'I'm about to lie my ass off, I know, you know it, we all know it'

no idea how all of this works. Are punitive damages a given? The $4.1m are a decent start, but I'd hope for much more.

So if people will say anything to get out of trouble does the corollary hood that people will say anything FOR money?

If these are your priors how do you differentiate between Jones speaking truth to power, speaking to cover his ass and speaking to generate money off rubes?

I heard a pundit say in Texas the Court of Appeal accepts a multiplier of up to 4X.

Not a lawyer but

In terms of damages compensatory are designed to be for actual losses. So 4.1 million in actual damage from Jones is a really high number.

The maximum damage in terms of real loss would be the future income plus therapy costs so 4.1 million to cover those damages seems kind of reasonable.

The punitive damages are where the purpose is to punish Jones so that number will likely be higher

Every estimate i can find of Alex's personal wealth puts him in the $2.5M - $10M range, which is really ####ty given his reach and how much revenue he generates. If his focus was to amass personal wealth in whatever way he could, hed be worth $100M+.

E: the same sites that show Alex net worth also, show that he is worth many times less what people like Rachel Maddow or Don Lemon are worth. Despite Alex owning his company and being in the game much longer.
