It's amazing that OV has tied Hull who had back to back to back 70+ goal seasons (72, 86 and then 70). That's a lot of goals in that 3 year stretch!

I am looking at this link:

Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 games = 0.601 gpg
Ovechkin scored 741 goals in 1,209 games = 0.613 gpg

If Ovi keeps on scoring at this pace, he will get to 894 goals in 1,459 games, beating Gretzky by 28 games. That is just 250 games away, about 3 full seasons from now.

If Ovi wants to pursue 1,000 goals, with his current pace, he will reach by game 1,632, which is 423 games away, about 5 1/2 full seasons. This is not out of reach at all.

The goal record seemed like the 2nd most untouchable stat in sporting. It is remarkable that he could be doing it. 1000 goals just seems so ludicrous to consider.

Howe has 975 between pro leagues. It would be something to see Ovie emphatically top that.

I hope one day we see someone challenge the point record too. It is wonderful to think that the stench of the no good can even be cleaned from the history books.

Players’ offensive output eventually declines. The question becomes how long Ovi can keep it up and how long he plays.

Scoring goals in your late 30s is much harder than scoring them in your 20s and early 30s. It will take a Hurculean effort for him to tie Gretzky, and 1000 is probably impossible (unless he takes a drink from Brady's fountain of youth...)

In 2017 Ovechkin scored 33 goals in 82 games, at the age of 31. Since then, his goals/GP rates have been 0.598, 0.630, 0.701, 0.533, and so far is hitting 0.917 this season. It seems silly to bet against this guy who just does not seem to be slowing down as he gets older. I am sure it will happen at some point, but I also think that Ovechkin is skilled and smart enough to make the necessary adjustments to stay successful. It sure seems to be working.

I can't believe how well Ovechkin continues to produce without Backstrom.

To this point, Backstrom has been extremely consistent when healthy. He has been almost exactly a point per game player since 2010.

It's amazing how long these two have been line mates at such a high level.

But yet here we are. Ovechkin is lighting it up and Backstrom hasn't even played.

Wasn’t Kuznetsov in there for the better part of a different year once?

Actually, it seems silly to bet against father time.

Ovechkin has not slowed down at all yet - much to his credit. But it remains a safe bet that he will.

And to think OV is not even in that great shape. Imagine how much better he'd be if he took his fitness seriously

What makes you think that Ovechkin is not in great shape?

Father time eventually wins. It’s inevitable; the only question is when.

Not until Ovi breaks Gretzky's record, and maybe after getting 1,000 goals. Again, if this takes 8 years to do so, he will play on till he's 45...

#742!

Alex Ovechkin scored @10:19 of the first period in his 1,211 game to pass Brett Hull for sole possession of #4 on the All-Time Goals list. Ovechkin beat Hull's goals-total in 46 fewer games, and is now 25 back of passing Jaromir Jagr for #3.

1 Wayne Gretzky — 894 [1487 GP]
2 Gordie Howe — 801 [1767 GP]
3 Jaromir Jagr — 766 [1733 GP]
4 Alex Ovechkin — 742, *12 Nov: 12G/14GP [1211 GP]

He very realistically could.

He has to score 24 more goals in 68 games?

You'd have to bet on him.
