Broken Garage Door Spring
Damn garage door stopped working and found the broken Torsion spring.
Does anyone know how much replacing this costs?
Any recommendations on a good garage door repair guy in the NW?

Just had this done last weeked. Both springs replaced was $225.00 +GST.
I will send you the contact when I arrive home. It was just a small company, the guy was a one man show but did good work on short notice.

I've used http://www.crosstowndoors.com/ and http://www.door-house.com/ for repairs and installation, Door House was a bit cheaper than Crosstown. I recommend calling for pricing.

Stampede Door is good and reliable, I think they even come out on weekends.
I used them for springs in the past and new door a couple weeks ago.

I used these guys once. They did a great job and the price was good. He even came out in that wicked snowstorm a couple years back.

I used Alberta Spring Works - I can't remember the exact price but it was in line with what the others are saying. I think it was a one-man show; I hired him because on the phone he seemed to know his stuff and was able to identify the problem right away from my description (down to knowing which brand of door I had). He came the next day and I had no problems with the service.

Beware of anyone going by the name of Mark Wiebe or The Garage Door Company (or other possible companies). Read this thread for further info http://forums.beyond.ca/st/355920/re...r-co-ltd-scam/

I had this issue today. Heck of a racket when a spring breaks. I used Ace Garage Door Repair.
www.acegaragedoorcalgary.com
I was fortunate that Jason there was nearby and he was available same day. His pricing was reasonable, 260. Door House didn't call back, Crosstown was looking at Tuesday after the long weekend and about 20 higher.
He also had some recommendations about maintenance and things to keep an eye out for. I was pleased with his work. He invited a call if any issues were to arise.
(Also thanks to CP for flagging that scamming sleaze. Even though the thread is a couple of years old, it's good to be able to easily avoid that.)

Word of warning. What ever you do, NEVER attempt to cheap out, and do this repair yourself. It is ultra dangerous. When I was a kid, some guy down our street was decapitated changing his spring, and the guy that used to service our door at another place I worked, had his arm torn right out of the socket changing the one on our main door.

Exactly! I had AndyL replace my springs last winter and he told me about a 20 year garage door vet that he knows that lost 3 fingers just a couple of months prior. Definitely NOT on the diy list!

A couple of years ago I used a guy named Peter who was recommended to me by my parents. His company is called Custom Door Works.
He came and installed a new garage door opener that I had purchased separately (he recommended buying it at Home Depot because it was cheaper than his cost). And the installation cost about half of what I was hoping to pay. He seemed thorough and the work was done well. He even took away the old one for me for no extra cost.
My folks and my sister have had him do work before (including my dad's spring a while back, IIRC), and I haven't heard a negative word from any of them.

Bumping this thread as I'm dealing with this issue this morning. Has anyone had any more recent price quotes on this or company recommendations?

Anyone needing garage repair work done I highly recommend done rite doors. Not only were they the best price I was quoted, but I got same day service and the job was done very quickly and handled all the clean up.

Is there any preventative maintenance that a home owner can do for a torsion spring (ie spray lube) or is it pretty much just a "wait till it snaps" kind of thing?

They put some lube on the new springs I had installed so I'm assuming that's about the extent of possible preventative maintenance.
