I don't understand this for the Pens.

Matheson is the prototype for great tools, no toolbox. Just hasn't been able to think the game well at an NHL level, so he's often exposed defensively. I still think he has potential to be an offensive middle-pair d-man, and a good one too, but he took a major step back last year.

Why did they sign him to that monster contract after only one NHL season, midway thru his ELC? At 17 points?
I imagine he was buddies with Gaudreau, eh?

Not sure why Hornqvist would waive for this...

More take home pay via taxes, nice climate I guess. He has a ring, so that box has been ticked already.

He hasn't been getting as much top 6 minutes in Pittsburgh anymore. In Florida they are losing Hoffman and Dadanov, so he should get top 6 time, maybe even 1st line RW

I don't know anything about his fancy stats, but just by watching you can tell he's not living up to the long term contract he was given after only playing in 20 NHL games
He could barely handle being a 3rd pairing guy this season, and ended up being arguably the worst player in the entire play in round. I consider Quenville the best coach currently in the game, and he ended up healthy scratching Matheson when it mattered most
He's still young and has the tools, so maybe a team can salvage him, but I'm shocked any team would take on his contract without receiving more in the deal. Hornqvist is older but he's still a great 2 way, top 6 winger. I don't understand this for Pittsburgh

All fair points, and I guess the fact that he only has an 8 team NTC next year plays in.
Still, having to move your family during the pandemic is not a lot of fun, and his daughter has probably just started school.

My only thought is that they want cost-control above all else in Florida. We saw this with other contracts done early in RFA status for guys like Trocheck, Barkov, and even Bjugstad. It's great if the player pans out as expected, and Matheson seemed to have a strong early showing with room for development. But then he stalled and regressed, and hasn't come close to being a top defender since.
It's the gamble of paying young talent before they drive their own price up with production. Had Matheson panned out as expected, he likely would have commanded 6-7 million/year easily. Instead, he's more of an albatross contract.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
It appears as if the Hornqvist/Matheson deal is being held up due to an insurance issue — the ability to fully insure contracts against injury.

There has to be a reasonable explanation for all of this. Matheson seems like an odd target to go after- especially salary wise with so many UFA Dmen that will become available soon.

Maybe Rutherford is playing the opposite of bigger and better. Trade 5.3 cap hit for 4.8. Then trade the 4.8 for a 4.2, then a 3.5 then a 2.9, then a 2, then 1.3, than a minimum contract, and voila!

I wonder if there will be an announcement of a second trade that sees Johnson on his way out. This is the absolute nail in that coffin.

Only GM that would take him in a trade would be Rutherford himself

Or if Rutherford is really strong on rehabilitation, he might take on someone like Okposo, hoping for the best.
