A third round pick is actually a lot for a rental of this quality.

A very stupid trade in hindsight.

I wouldn't mind him back, but the price would have to be reasonable. Honestly, we probably already have a similar player in Kylington ready to step in, and you don't need too many of those types.

If Forbort signs for cheap, keep him. Otherwise, focus on getting Brodie signed.

Both Forbort and Gustafsson ranged from terrible to average. Gus was consistently closer to average but he still wasn't good. I didn't want him re-signed.

So whats a good and realistic trade for a rental of this quality?

A PP specialist who has 17 goals and 60 points in 2018-2019.

They knew what he was when they made the trade for depth and needed help on the PP. Like, you need to give a team something when you trade for an NHL player.

I'm much more interested in whether they're talking to Brodie.

Gus not nearly good enough for top 4 unless you're on the PP 15 minutes a game. And sounds like he's far too expensive for the bottom pairing. Guess we'll see how it works out for him.

I think Brodie is gone, largely for reasons related to his family and not to the team.

I am fine with this, he only cost us a 3rd rounder and Forbort only cost us a 4th. These are the type of trades a team can always make when they are on the bubble to push to hopefully get into the playoffs. There will be similar options available for us next year to make a similar trade or trades and it will only cost maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick, which will give Kylington another 60 games to get used to the NHL.

Stempniak led the Flames in points, and then was traded for a 3rd for a full season.

A rental of this quality shouldn't be worth more than a 4th IMO.

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - ?
? - ?

Better hope Valimaki, Mackey, Yelesin, Kylington etc can perform well enough beyond just making the team or all the ra ra discussion about who should coach will be for nothing anyway.

Safe bet the Flames acquire another Dman still. Via a trade or free agency.

Barrie is a right shot Brodie/Gus hybrid that makes a lot of sense and probably won't break the bank as much as expected coming off a down year with Toronto.

As I mentioned elsewhere, he also spent 4 years in Kelowna with Huska as his head coach.

No way the Flames can afford him after they sign Hall and Pietrangelo.

Kylington/Mackey, Valimaki, Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Andersson - that's six. Kylington/Mackey don't need to play heavy minutes with that kind of depth in front of him, so can grow in a sheltered role. Add a couple scrubs and the backend is set.

Spend the money at forward.

This.

We always load up on Defence and it never works.

But at the same time look at what happened to Winnipeg with a vezina winner and all that fire power but a fragile defence.

From the moment we acquired him, it felt to me like it was just for some help over the stretch-run and into the playoffs. Technically we have room for him in the lineup, as he brings a skillset that we don't really have; however, based on his current salary, and offensive production in previous years, he was always going to be asking for more than we were/are prepared to give him.

Do you know something? I'm with Jiri and that it seems likely he's gone but still hoping.

Losing Brodie leaves a big hole IMO. Keeping him, if it's even possible, would be expensive.

He is going to be looking for a deal in the 3.5-5M range on 2-5 years I think. He puts up points and and is young enough to get some term on his deal.

I thought he would go for a 2nd+prospect so happy we snagged him for a 3rd. Not shocked he is not coming back

Yup Flames replace Hamonic internally quite easily with Andersson but I don’t see a clear Brodie replacement. Ideally Valimaki is the guy but who knows he hasn’t played in a long time. They need to definitely add one Dman to this roster over the offseason
