From Peters-Gate to the end of the season ... 5 on 5 splits

12. Calgary +7

expected goals for split five on five

16. Calgary 50.77%
24. Edmonton 47.57%

Yeah Edmonton was charging hard to the post season ...

As I recall one of the simulations shortly after the hiatus started had the Oilers collapsing down the stretch and missing the playoffs entirely. It seems completely plausible to me that they are going to get bounced in the the play-in round.

Edmonton is no good.

Blackhawks played them well in the last meeting if I recall. 2-1 in the season series. Most definitely plausible.

Bad matchup for the northern special teams sweethearts.

The Oilers were 22nd in PP opportunities per game this season and let in the 3rd most shorthanded goals against. You sure you want to bank on them continuing to score an usually high number of goals on the PP after a huge break?

Edmonton's PP is #1 in the league. If the league wants them to move forward, it'll be easy to do so.

Given the challenges with teams not being in shape/experienced with each other, wouldn't be shocked to see more penalties. Teams with more speed, also wouldn't be shocked at drawing more penalties.

Fun times.

True. Who's to say the PP magic beans don't run out coming off an extended break.

Historic implies highly unusual stats, at the far end of the bell curve.

Which means isn't something that will continue indefinitely.

Oilers have massive pressure on them facing the 12th place Hawks IMO

Lose three games and their "epic season" is an absolute failure

If the Hawks are preparing for a series against the Oilers, they'll be spending a great deal of time working on their penalty kill. Its tougher for pp to work in series.

If the Hawks win the 5v5 mathup, they'll probably win going away, and since the Oilers are dreadful 5v5 and they lack depth up front and their blueline is below average, I expect this series to be over before it starts. Especially if Smith is their starter after being off for several months. Its probably tough for Grandpa to get out of bed, let alone do the splits.

This would all be true if it wasn’t for the magical third line. And don’t get me started on how wicked good the 4th line is.

If McDavid finishes his career without a cup they'll call him selfless for allowing all the other teams a chance.

I mean he's writing as if the other divisions jump from 1st to 3rd and there are no other 2nd place teams.

Also no mention of how garbage the Pacific has been in general. Soitbegins.gif

Good grief. As this thing ramps up over the next month or so, the Oilers' propaganda campaign is gonna be unbearable. They're already at vomit-inducing levels, and we're still probably 2 months away from playing any games...if they'll even be played at all. A lot can change in a month regarding the virus.

Let them build themselves up and give them hope, Chicago sweeping them will just make their tears saltier.
