I could see it happening if Newcastle offered Mbappe like £2 million a week, who could possibly turn that down? But yeah when I've suggested obscene overpayments, that's what I mean. £500,000 a week is not even worth considering to go to Newcastle.

For the French Champions. Still in the Champions' League. In Paris.
Newcastle and Paris. One of these things is not like the other.

Newcastle will have to be "on the map" before they become an option for that kind of player, meaning they'll have to be a competitive club that plays in the CL and challenge for titles. That won't happen for a few years. You can't just come in during a relegation battle and think throwing money at those players will entice them to come to the Northeast.

PSG weren't the French champions when Neymar signed, Monaco were.

They signed Robinho for 32.5m pounds at the end of the summer transfer window in 2008. Is that much different than Newcastle potentially signing Mbappe or Pogba on a free?
|
Yes, it's much different
Robinho at that time would basically be Newcastle signing gareth bale now
Newcastle are not going to be signing top world class players until they look competitive in a top 4 race, it took man city 3 years to get highly coveted players like yaya and aguero
Newcastle will either be signing older players looking for one last pay day who are past their prime, or players off smaller clubs who want a step up

Why not? Manchester City did it. They signed Robinho, Gareth Barry, Wayne Bridge, Shay Given, Craig Bellamy, Nigel de Jong, Vincent Kompany, and Pablo Zabaleta the first season they had a new ownership group with big pockets. Those are some of the best players in the Premier League era.

Market is wildly different now then when Man City got rich. Newcastle will need to be spending north of £30 million for good players, not even great or world class.

Hazard, bale, coutinho, ramsey are the types of players they will sign right now
Lingard, tarkowski, sarr, dele are the players in england rumored
I would say its 3 years before they sign world class players, but making the top 4 is so much harder now than it was 13 years ago when city started their project
The big 6 have such a huge gap in revenue to the rest, including newcastle, and even if newcastle have 200m over the next few years, spurs, arsenal, and liverpool do too, and city, united, chelsea have more

For young players with many years left on their current deals, yes. For players about to become free agents, no. That's where the real difference will be. Why spend £30m on a defender when a perfectly serviceable player like James Tarkowski will be available in July for nothing?

One of them is, kompany, and he wasnt a huge buy, he was a younger player they rightly saw a huge future in
Zabaleta was a solid right back, but nowhere near the best in the league
The others were overpriced older players who didnt play any large part in their title or champions league runs years later

Gareth Barry made 34, 33, 34, and 31 appearances for them in his four years at Manchester City. In those four seasons they finished 5th, 3rd, 1st, and 2nd. The guy played in 653 Premier League matches and you're talking about him like he was a squad player. Show some respect.

He was an average player
His career ended when germany exposed him in 2010 at the world cup
You said they would sign mbappe and pogba which no offense, shows how little you understand european football and transfers, and now you're countering with gareth Barry, who would be like them signing scott mctominay right now

I didn't say that they'd sign anybody, if you go back and read my post you'll see that I wrote that I think they have a strong chance.
Career ended? He would make 254 more Premier League appearances AFTER the World Cup in South Africa, including 34 in the 2011-12 season when his club won the Premier League. He was one of the top defensive midfielders in the world for over a decade. Manchester City had the money to buy anyone and they kept playing him for a reason.

McTominay is a pretty fair comparison. Gareth Barry was bang-average and they swiftly moved on from him once they signed Fernandinho.

They were also signing Barry from Aston Villa, not a Champions League contender, and their competition in signing him was a mid-to-late 2000s Liverpool which didn't have much money to throw around, not Real Madrid.
Signign promising players from mid-table sides would be the comparison, even if the positions aren't comparable. While the Robinho signing was a surprise, Real was looking to get rid of Robinho and other teams weren't throwing the same kind of money around. Mbappe is in Paris, and has his choice of places to sign, with other teams also willing to throw money around. Don't see the situations as comparable.

The elephant in the room remains avoiding relegation. Even getting the Lingards and Tarkowskis of the world will be significantly more challenging in the Championship. Those types can go play for PL teams fighting for top four and not grind it out in the Championship. It all seems so easy in theory, but money only goes so far, you also need to offer the chance to play meaningful games.

Excellent! Perhaps they will bring in Bagor to be his media-relations go-between.
