Icon44 Devils to name Lindy Ruff as head coach

Elliotte Friedman has mentioned this as a strong possibility a couple times and now it appears it will happen.

I like it for NJ. I think Ruff is a good coach for a young team and he'll instill some discipline into their young guys.

Well, a coach has to want to go somewhere. Gallant is probably in a position where he can pick his destination.

Clearly Gallant and Laviolette are waiting on the Flames to make a decision in the off season.

Too lazy to do the research on his metrics as a Head Coach but the Rangers had horrible defensive metrics under Ruff the last 3 years

Makes me happy, I want Laviolette or Gallant on the Flames.

Man, the Devils keep spinning their wheels. Ruff is an outdated coach.

yes, Ruff had lousy numbers in NY, but who wouldn't? The team was about as tight as a two-bit hooker with the fleet in.

True , but he did interview with the devils. He must have had some interest to show up for interview

In sports where analytics is taking over a lot of the head coaching decisions, I wonder how guys like Ruff adjust? It's a different sport, but in baseball there's a real push for decisions based on analytics, with varying amounts of buy-in into how much some teams deploy it to make every decision. Hockey is much my dynamic, but when a team hires an older coach I'm not sure they buy much into analytics with in-game decisions. My view is likely bunk science against older guys, but that's my hypothesis.

Coaching isn't a one-an job anymore though, it's a 4 or more man job. IMO, the head coach is more of a game manager than anything else. Everything else would be joint efforts, i would imagine.

Anyways Ruff was an assistant in NY. His last gig was Dallas and they were a pretty good possession team, their system the year they made the second round was everything I wished the Flames would do. Great zone entries on PP, tons of stretch pass at ES.

I wanted Alan Vigneault who was available for ever and he’s done a pretty amazing job in Philly. Peter Laviolette reminds me a lot of him. Probably because of the French names and both coaching Philly but I just have a good feeling whoever picks him up. Hopefully it’s us.

This is hilarious. Almost feel bad for Devils fans seeing their season written out like this.

He does have a decent career winning percentage reaching or exceeding 50 wins three times and the Sabres have not had any success since firing him. Devils to me at least do not appear to be an attractive destination as they look like they are treading water so this stop is probably going to put a dent in his career winning percentage as head coach.

I know Gallant a bit and seemed like he didn't want to go to NJ. He knows he'll have plenty of opportunities so he can be picky. He didn't even really interview with them just a couple phone calls.

Get your hands out of your pants dreaming about having Gallant or Laviolette here. The Flames will probably just turn Geoff Ward into permanent head coach.

It's part of the process baby...

I don't think it'll be as bad as people are making it out to be, that said I am glad he's off the market
