Tough call, but my tie breaker was: if I had to choose between having 6 Brodies or 6 Phaneufs...I'd take the former if I wanted to win, and the latter if I wanted to be entertained...
This will be interesting. The way I see it the arguments for Macoun and Brodie are similar, as are the arguments for Dion and Housley. Which implies it will be very close.
But my guess is Brodie is getting the newer generation fan's votes, and many of the Macoun and Housley voters won't break his way.
I went Dion. I would have gone Housley and Macoun before voting Brodie. And do you consider Phil Russell in there, three years with Calgary and a year plus in Atlanta? He was pretty good.
Phaneuf played 378 games over 5 seasons for the Flames, scoring 75 goals and 228 points in that time, which are impressive numbers, no doubt. He was in the running for the Norris every year he was in Calgary and finished second in 07-08.
Brodie, on the other hand, has played 634 games over 10 seasons in Calgary, twice as long as Phaneuf, putting up 48 goals and 266 points in that time, which I admit are definitely not as impressive as Phaneuf's numbers. He finished 18th in Norris voting in 14-15. What's worth noting is that Brodie was, IIRC, our number one defenseman that year in the playoffs, the only time we've made it past the first round since '04. He's been one of our top 2 defensemen since, what, 2014? And Brodie has been, by all accounts, a team player, despite being forced to play on his less comfortable side for a couple years, and a great ambassador to the city.
Say what you will about Phaneuf's play, but he was *not* a popular guy in Calgary IIRC, and his character was rumoured to be one of the reasons he was traded.
Brodie's longevity, character, and stats are all reasons why he is getting my vote. Dion was better at his peak, and if you're voting purely based on stats I totally understand why Phaneuf would get your vote, but Brodie is largely underrated here, and I believe he deserves to be recognized.

I like Brodie better but I voted for Phaneuf. I just think if you look at who would you rather have as your 7th option in defence, Phaneuf at his prime when he was here vs Brodie at his prime, you have to go Phaneuf. Brodie is great and probably underrated by a loud portion of fans, but he’s never reached the heights Phaneuf did.

He was such an entertaining player. Too bad he was a bit of jerk. I think the trade and his performance in Toronto sours just how good he was here. I realize it’s unfair to compare a few years here to career numbers but .600 ppg would be top 50 all time for scoring by a defensemen his .198 Goals per game would be 20th all time.
He was a superstar derailed by injury and possibly attitude. I’ll take him over Brodie.
Has to be dion. While he was here, he was an allstar and everyone wanted him. How many times has Brodie been an allstar? If he wasn't against Crosby and Ovechkin, he would have been Calder trophy winner.
