That Leafs/Flames rumor mentioned above was an interesting nugget that I had never heard prior. Sounds like it would have been the following:

To Tor: Ramage, Pepper, M. Hunter, Wamsley and Ranheim
To CGY: Leeman and 1.3 Pick (Which ended up being Scott Thornton)

From an '89 perspective that probably would have been highway robbery for the Leafs but looking back on it it really would have been nothing for nothing--I guess we'll never know who CGY would have picked at 1.3 though. Leeman had a pretty good year in '90 but we all know how he turned out. Ranheim had tons of potential but that knee injury in '91 really set him back. I do find it interesting that Ramage ended going to Toronto for their second round pick that year and we took Kent Manderville (who ended up going back to Toronto in the Gilmour deal a few years later). Ramage was always interesting to me as he never really fit in CGY like I think management wanted him too--Can't blame him as we had so much depth in those years. He did have a nice playoff run filling in for Suter.

So all in all, really, the only thing to show for this was the Ramage for the Toronto 2nd that took place the day prior to the draft. Which was actually a good deal when you think about, only the '89 draft happened to be a lousy one.

a very dominant season by a dominant team. I sort of forgot how the Habs kinda owned us in the postseason awards, but then again the thing with the 89 team was how deep they were (the Habs were pretty deep too, but had a few more obvious strengths- esp Roy). I'm glad Patterson got 2nd in the Selke but that is a pesky award you could probably just as well make a case for Gilmour there (and over Carbonneau) for example

Vernon was an obvious strength too. Vernon was equal to Roy as their stats were nearly identical such as goals against average and save percentage.

Such a great season. So good to go back through it and reminisce. Thank you bobbylouie for doing all this hard work for all of us. You deserve to be in the CalgaryPuck Hall of Fame just for this thread alone!

I said it from the start and I'll say it again--This is the thread of the year. Hats off to BobbyLouie for sharing his treasure chest of info and nuggets with us. Should we keep it going for the 89-90 season? That year always fascinates me because we had all the cards stacked in our favor and this team was set up to win in 90 and 91, but we all know how that turned out.

Also, FWIW, Chopper did add points in Game 1 and Game 2 of the LAK series in '90 so that brought him to 19 straight playoff games with a point. Does he hold any sort of record with that? I thought I would be able to find this info on Hockey-Reference, but they still do not have player streak finders in their database.

Is it my imagination or is there more activity here now that the updates have stopped?

=============================

More seriously,

about the archiving of this, obviously I have all the originals, but 99% of the material
as it appeared here (including my text that I have in MSWord but uploaded as a jpeg just to make the formatting easier) is now on Imgur. As I understand it, CP doesn't actually save anything on this server and just provides links to the Imgur uploads.

So if my Imgur account became inactivated for some reason or if Imgur ceased to exist, essentially all of this thread would disappear. Is that essentially how this works?

Excuse me for bumping this otherwise completed thread to share a personal
story. With the current games back in progress, this will disappear off the
front page quickly enough anyway. But for the people who followed along
when this thread was active, I wanted to share a crazy story that recently
happened and involves CalgaryPuck. I didn't know where else to post it.

On another hockey site when nothing was happening in the early COVID
days, a guy asked a question, "What would be your holy grail hockey video
that has never been available?" I think he was a collector and was asking
just in case somebody might have something tucked away so he could
arrange trades. A few people posted and to be honest a lot of it wasn't really
that obscure and they were directed to places where they had their wish list
come true.

I posted mine, but I'd already been searching for it for over 50 years and had
been told multiple times by pretty good sources that it simply didn't exist. It
was a long forgotten game from early November 1967, Philadelphia at
Montreal. I knew first hand that the Philadelphia telecast was erased not
long after the game so the tape could be re-used, as was the regular practice
to save money in those days. Several times I'd talked to people from the
CBC, and they told me that while many of the Leafs' games from that era are
archived (and shown on "Leafs' classics"), the Canadiens' games were rarely
saved for the same reason that the Philadelphia station erased the tapes. I
accepted that, since it's well known that even the big US networks (CBS and
NBC) erased their copies of the first Super Bowl from the same era and none
of that TV coverage survives. If things like the Super Bowl weren't important
enough to save, my obscure game was sorta hopeless.

However, based on a few hints that caught my attention over the decades, I
always had a sneaky feeling that at least short clips from my game existed
somewhere. So I posted my request with the comment "I've been looking
for this for over 50 years and it doesn't exist, so I already know that my wish
isn't coming true."

A few weeks later I got a pop up message on Facebook from what was
clearly a made up name, and I noticed that the account had just been
activated days earlier, so it was either spam or somebody who didn't want to
be identified. It said "I have two questions, are you the guy who posted at
the hockey site about the non-existent video of the November 1967 game?
and are you the same guy who posted the Flames' Stanley Cup thread at
Calgary Puck ???"

When I said I was, he went on for a few minutes thanking me for the info in
this thread, then asked, "Do you remember early in the thread when a guy
said he was so happy to see that this info exists and was saved somewhere"
and you said something like "you'd be surprised what's out there". (I think it
was EastCoastFlamesFan). He added......"well, as my personal thank you for
the Flames' thread, it's your turn to be surprised." He then told me that
based on my Facebook page, he knew my general location and said I should
go the next day at 7 pm to the parking lot of a large mall in my area, drive to
the C3 pillar in the very center of the lot, and retrieve the envelope out of a
pickle jar that will be sitting there.

He said this would be his only message, his facebook account would be
deleted immediately after he said goodbye, the official story has to be that
this video still doesn't exist anywhere and I shouldn't talk to anybody else at
the CBC about it, and made me swear that I wouldn't share it or re-post it on
any public site. End result: I don't really need to know what all the intrigue
is about, but on one of those early COVID days when NOBODY was outside, I
drove to a completely deserted parking lot and to my amazement, my 50+
year search ended. I now have a full game copy of something that doesn't
exist. (minus the first 30 minutes since CBC games in those days started in
progress). I suppose I shouldn't even be telling that this happened, but the
person involved has some connection with CP, so whoever you are, thank
you very much. Apparently, it's even more true than I realized,....you'd be
surprised what's out there.

What?! LOL. This story is insane and amazing at the same time. I feel like I was reading you recap an episode of the X-Files for something like that. Who is the mystery man/woman that seems to be sitting on a goldmine of archived games? Really cool that this person was lurking in the shadows following this thread--or maybe not? Also, I just love the secrecy of all this--BL it sounds like you're talking in code/riddles half the time with these game logs. Is there a reason why this is all so hush-hush? Is it an NHL issue or something?

*Announcing upfront that this post is off-topic, but I figured I could get
away with it since 99% of the rest of the thread was on.

Didn't know where else to put this, so just adding it onto this old thread
for convenience sake. This has nothing to do with the Flames and
probably will only be of interest to you if you are OVER the age of 80.

Somebody here asked me about a month ago if I had the report for this
game so I dug it out today, but damned if I can remember who asked.
So I hope you see it here, or if you signal me again in the future,
I can at least direct you here.

Also, I saw Paul Ranheim's name come up recently in another thread,
some of his first year history is included up thread.

^^ studying that Bruins line up and at first I was like who the heck are those 2 goalies? but I guess it's all explained within the story. neat to see the smaller rosters (5 D, 11F), outside the goalies that Boston team is pretty famous- just look at that group of forwards, almost everyone of them is noteworthy (not all as elite players, but gained fame and or notoriety in one way or another)

as an aside- interesting you bring up Ranheim, like you when he was discussed earlier this week I immediately thought about this thread

also- now THAT's what an expansion team used to look like (as opposed to Vegas, or even Seattle)...assuming Cheevers and Johnston are healthy how many Seals crack that Bruins lineup? possibly zero

Great to see this thread still alive. Was so much fun going through the '89 season, especially during those early Covid days. Wow, hard to believe we're almost at the two year anniversary--this threads feels like it was 10 years ago!

Bobbie L, any recent fun stories to share? Any other random VHS tapes in pickle jars show up at your door recently?
