Just kind of funny that I thought our one weakness going into the playoffs was goaltending and it's been our only bright spot. Shows what I know, I guess.

The Avs are not this good. The Flames have fragile mentality when it comes to the emotional war that is the playoffs. Reminds me of the Mike Tyson phrase "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". Well the Flames got punched in the mouth and got traumatized instead of punching back.
That's a pretty good account of where they're at as I see it too. They are shell shocked and not responding with a clear purpose and strategy or the guts to push through. Peters had great success in the regular season with his approach, but the Flames could really do with a Hartley or a Torts in the room right now to snap them out of it and get them going. Can we have one coach for the regular season and one for the playoffs?

No, he didn't. He said "but when people are asking for your Valimakis, your Andersons, your first, you have to step back" (or something along those lines). That does not mean Vegas wanted Valimaki + Anderson+ a 1st. It means those were assets that were asked for in the deal.
GMs never come out and say exactly what was offered in a deal that fell through.
"When you start talking about what the asks were. Listen we went fishing for some.... I can't talk about the guys but we can all put 2 and 2 together, but when the asks are 1st pick this year, 1st pick next year, Valimaki AND Ander-- it makes the decision fairly easy."
I thought if I smoked enough weed and drank enough absinthe last night I’d wake up forgetting about my 28 years of Flames fandom. Nope I’m still a jaded depressed Flames fan coping with the aftermath of yet another playoff choke.
I’m think the problem this year is the team is playing too safe. When they were successful early in the year the team was flying with a hard forecheck and quick transitions. Later in the year when the games got tighter it seems like their style was adjusted to try and grind out low scoring playoff style wins. Things like resting players down the stretch, playing Fantenberg over Valimaki, going to a 1 man forcheck, and zero changes after game 2 point towards a team playing to not lose.
Hopefully with the season on the line the Flames can start playing aggressive again. 5 playoff games is not enough.

Sadly, the Flames are caught in this weird netherworld of not being good enough to advance in the post season, and never being bad enough to draft guys like McKinnon and Landeskog.
i really thought this would be the year to change that narrative, but it will take an epic comeback for this team to beat that team in three straight games

Yep, and their game does not work without creativity. There's no creativity without confidence and letting things go a bit loose. They're playing to the weakest aspects of their nature as a team right now, making them a bad team.
If being fully backed into the corner now allows them to let loose and play their game with creativity, fun and confidence the series could be back on. If they get back to that state of mind I think they could still turn this series around and win it. That's a big 'if' though based on the mental response they've shown so far and the lack of fire on display from the coaches on down.

And something there is no reason not to take at face value
You never take a GM or coach speaking to the media at face value.
Maybe it was the ask at one point. And maybe it was in response to Flames wanting to include bad contracts. It’s not very relevant, since question is what it would have taken and we will likely never know.
Ottawa willing to take a 2nd and 2 prospects from Vegas but want 2 firsts and 2 roster players from the flames?
Doesn't make any sense unless that was the deal to take back Neal in the process or it was for a larger deal including someone else off the Sens roster.
Someone explain to me how that's believable in the slightest.

I don't believe it in the slightest. Don't see how anyone could.

I had forgotten that Treliving said two 1sts, so I think your suggestion that taking Neal back is the only logical solution to the math and the difference in his claim and what Vegas ultimately paid.
I remember there was chatter about a Stone trade to Calgary being more expensive because Ottawa would have had to take salary back. BT's really gotta start staying away from the big name ufas

I don't know what I know anymore.
When an entire conference winning season is a mirage, what can you even believe to be true?
