I think many of you would agree with me that this past week or so has been fun.
I think it's been a long time since there's been so much player movement.
The media is probably pretty grateful for this as they're often so desperate for content.

Agreed, we may actually see a "Free Agent Frenzy" show on TSN with actual content rather than studio antics for a change. Wouldn't that be something to see.
Expansion draft + flat cap + lots of big names still available/wanting to be traded SHOULD hopefully add up to a somewhat entertaining day tomorrow. James Neal buyout to start the day will be swell

I would give Kylington the ice time over Stone.
Just know that they are going to sign Stone again this summer.
If you believe in the upside of Valimaki then he needs to get the Tanev treatment this season to help him progress his game.

Interesting to read people’s assumptions /evaluations on Kylington. This is a player that was projected as a top 5 pick in his draft year and fell to 60th. Every team in the league passed on him at least once. Since then he hasn’t established himself in a bottom pairing role. He has been on waivers, multiple times, and I would think discussed as part of trade proposals, probably on a number of occasions. Yet, some have him in a top 4 role moving forward.

It would be way more fun if Treliving would actually do something instead of "always being in on it" or whatever they're trying to sell us these days.
This team is not going anywhere as built. If Johnny remains unextended past tomorrow this offseason will be a huge failure (IMO we're already very close.)

Man I’ve been waiting patiently for over two years for Tre to make a big trade of the core, I really thought this off-season was finally when it was going to happen. Still lots of time left, I really hope Tre can make me excited to be a Flames fan again.

Agree with everything but the bolded. It seems like some fans are pre-loading something to be upset about, which seems completely bizarre to me.
If they want to keep Johnny and he wants to stay, it does not matter if he's extended today or months from now.
There is $18M in cap space with the two biggest re-signings being Dube and Valimaki, neither of which will command much. If the Flames stand largely pat and go into the season with even half that cap space, it would be a failure. Does anyone actually expect that to happen?

Why risk losing so much leverage in Johnny contract negotiations? His NMC starts tomorrow- once it kicks in, the team loses contract negotiation leverage by losing the ability to easily trade him and recoup assets. Instead it becomes about where he wants to go, and we could get cornholed into another iginla trade.
I understand the want around here to remain positive about these things, and I genuinely hope we keep Johnny moving forward. But there are no guarantees, and tomorrow our position becomes exponentially weaker.

I don’t think its a matter of him not wanting to do something. He has to make decisions that work for the team. I surely don’t want him to make a trade where we get shafted.

With Holtby being bought out, I wonder if he's a tenable signing for the back up role in CGY. Experienced, can carry the load for a stretch if Marky gets injured. Very veteran. Could be cheap as most post buy out signings are.

Because it's imagined leverage.
If both sides agree that Johnny belongs on the Flames, and both sides are being reasonable, it's a matter of time before he signs and the wait is in getting to a number both sides are happy with. At this point, there's nothing that suggests this isn't the case.
All it does is remove an option in case things go sideways. There's no leverage in contract negotiations. If Treliving says "come down to this number or we trade you today" and Johnny doesn't like the number, he'll willingly be traded to wherever with the comfort of knowing he'll either go to a team he wants to sign with or be UFA in a year and pick his spot.
Treliving is by no means forced to sign the contract after today. If Johnny's camp doesn't budge, he'll get the 5 team list and go to work on a trade. In terms of leverage in trade negotiations, which do you think the Flames would have more leverage with: 5 teams that he's willing to sign an extension with, or 10 teams he isn't? Trading for 7-8 years of Gaudreau is more palatable than trading for 1 year of him.

Kind of hilarious that teams are buying out players on the eve of free agency only repeat the cycle in the coming weeks of signing players they will eventually have to buy out.

You don’t know if both sides agree
Talk is cheap.
Johnny likes to stay if they pay him
Last time Treliving didn’t want to
