I have a GT Avalance that was purchased at SportChek.
Less than 2 years old, and I'd guess close to 50km of use in total.

Today, this happened. Spoiler for size:
Spoiler!

The male end is considerably smaller than the female end (that's what she said) and won't thread back in.
When I say 50km on it, it's mostly in a cul-de-sac with 6 & 8 year old kids. No crazy adventures here. It's always hung from the ceiling in the garage. It's never had a traumatic experience, nor has it been ridden hard, so I don't understand what went wrong.

Other than the piece on the left side of the hole that looks destroyed, am I missing anything?
can I get just that bar that the pedal threads into? Or do I need a whole new ?crank set?.

I'd love to do it myself if it'll save me some coin. Any suggestions?

That's what happens when a bike is put together by someone who doesn't give a ####. The pedal was cross threaded and forced on. No saving that. I'd take it back to them and see if they will take responsibility for it.

If not, you will want a new peddle. Those threads are to far gone to risk wrecking your new crank. Which you will need. Tough to tell form the picture, but I am going to assume it is the type where the crank arm and the chainrings are one piece. It will be something like this:

https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5057-3...et-6-7-8-Speed

Make sure you get the right save, same number of teeth, and speed type(8 speed means you have 8 gears on your rear cassette).

The process is all very simple. You remove the centre bolt with an allen key, and wiggle the chainring off. If it is to tight(I'd guess no, given the lack of care on the pedal) you have to use a crank puller. It's a special tool. Then you tighten the new one on, and re-tighten after a few rides.

Thread on the new pedal(they are keyed right and left, one has a reverse thread, so get that right!) and tighten. Some can be done with an allen key on the back side, but a pedal wrench may be required if you don't have thin enough wrenches.

Get a Pedal Tap and a heli coil insert. The pedal taps in this instance are 5/8 and the insert is 9/16 like your pedal. You tap the crank and loctite the heli coil in the crank.

That's a rather expensive repair method for $50 worth of replacement parts though.

it depends on if you have cheap cranks or not. And most bike shops can do it for you, so you don't have to pay for the kit. Just pointing out that cranks are fixable. If they are cheap, then you replace them. If they aren't cheap, then you fix them.

It is good to know you can do that, thanks. My response was based on it being a Sport Chek bike, so I assume replacement cranks would be cheap and easy enough to DIY.

Looking for a new bike - I ride approx. 100km per week, in the lower Springbank road area. Almost bought a Cannondale synapse Tiagra carbon, no disk brakes for 2199 today....is this a decent deal? if not, and recommendations?

Tiagra groupset and no disc brakes for $2199? I would stay away. You can get a 105 groupset and disc brakes for that price with a carbon frame.

All the major brands should have carbon bikes with 105 and disc brakes in this price range. I paid 2k for the Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 and have been very happy.

You are right. I just saw a wrecked crank and never thought about where the bike was from. I've done that before. Just said Eff it, a new part is cheaper than the fix.

Any preference for a route on the 26th? South of the city? West towards Bragg Creek?

Possibility of adding a new track along 19 Ave SE which actually looks like a very good street to do this one. It's a through road, doesn't face many houses along the north side, and is close to 17th.

This would make a ton of sense, the pathway dead-ends at Barlow and 17th right now with no real way to go.

The city has been pretty stagnant on the cycle track front ever since the Pilot was approved. Likely a result of how hard it was to do this to begin with with the amount of opposition that was put up and a feeling like, well, we did our part, we've got cycle tracks now and we are done.

There is still so much wrong with the existing cycle tracks that need to be fixed that seems to have fallen off the table, but I would be excited for some new dedicated tracks to be built to re-energize the thought.

Just please finish 5th from 17th to the Elbow river. You lose 30 parking spots to do it but that is a zoo of traffic after work heading south. You just have to take the lane and follow the peloton.

Just a reminder to remember to take off your bike rack when your not using it. I just got a warning for my bike rack blocking my license plate.
