'Hawks are retiring #7 in honor of Chris Chelios at this afternoon's game. Chelios is one of my most despised former Blackhawks, mainly due to a selfish penalty he took, behind the play in the 1992 SCF. In Game 3, down 1-0 with Belfour pulled, and the 'Hawks pressing, Chelios took an unnecessary retaliation fighting penalty/game misconduct at 19:29, killing the 'Hawks' chances at tying the game. The Pens went on for the sweep, losing each game by 1. Chelios often took undisciplined penalties during his 'Hawks' tenure, as well as getting caught behind the play, due to his hyper-aggressiveness, less observant fans often blamed his D-Partner, Keith Carney, for getting beaten, when it was Chelios that let him down. Carney was booed out of town, and went on to have a decent career elsewhere. The final straw, for me, was when Chelios negotiated a trade to Detroit, while still under contract to the 'Hawks.
Retiring #7 should have been held off for Seabrook.

Did anyone catch the pre-game TNT show from the Devils/Lightning game? Sounded like they were talking about the devil's and goaltending and potentially Markstrom but I just missed it. Can anyone provide a quick summary?

They were talking about how teams plays different in front of a goalie they trust, and how goalies aren't seasoned until they're 28-30, so Markstrom is NOT old at 34. Also said devils had to get something done before deadline.

It is somewhat surprising that the Hawks would be doing this now, 25 years later after he stopped playing there, so there certainly is some romanticizing about the good times and forgetting about the issues you mention and have much more knowledge of leading to his departure, and the fact he was just an overall arrogant ass, certianly in his later years. It was him and Tkachuk trashing the rooms in Nagano in 1998 that sort of showed his true colors.
Sort of like Lowe in the time between retiring and number retirement, though Lowe wagered a annual campaign for a decade to get the media to vote him in to the HoF and then was the requesite for retiring his Oilers number. Then a year later he leaves the Oilers very quickly and quietly.
Also let's go Ducks.

I should add that the telus feed joined the tnt feed mid sentence, so no idea how much i might have missed at the start.

Two easier games upcoming this week spaced out for NJ.
Sharks and Ducks Tuesday and Friday.
Then start a very hard run of solid teams beginning with LA on Sunday.
Now is the time. A trade this week gets Markstrom in net for sure by Sunday. If they wait until the deadline it will be too late.

Biz and the panel on TNT were really harping on the Devils goaltending for good reason saying how they're constantly chasing in games because they allow a couple goals against almost consistently. Markstrom's name has come up in the discussion too.
I was thinking about the Devils situation, and do wonder if I'd want to acquire Markstrom right now if I were Fitz. There's still a chance to make the playoffs but the odds are against them. If it were the Flames in that scenario, I'd rather they not give up the crazy assets being discussed. Markstrom is great, but the remaining runway in the season means not only do the Devils have to turn their game around almost 180 degrees, but the teams they're chasing also have to help the Devils out. That's almost always a recipe for disaster. I'd keep the assets right now, address the goaltending in the summer.

If the Devils are cooked, is there any chance of doing a 180° and trade Markstrom to the Kings? We might get a devils ransom trading him within the division, and with Rob Blake's questionable trade history I think we can win that trade. I think they could be the ideal trading partner.

Rittich and Talbot have both played pretty good, no? I can't see them spending too much on Goaltending.

The Devils' problems go beyond goaltending. Even with good one I don't see them going anywhere in the playoffs so spending a ton of assets and giving up on young players probably doesn't make a lot of sense. Their core is young so they can still treat this as a growth year.

The Hughes brothers appeared to be trying to make too much happen on their own today. I don't watch the Devils so I don't know if that is a recent thing or not.

Now imagine they do that again in the next week to get Markstrom and then miss the playoffs again. Well, GMs do weird things, so who knows, but as someone above mentioned, they're young still. Just treat this as a growth year.
