The Flames typically play McDavid with social distancing in place. Didnt see the game last night but it looks like the Leafs would actually hit him, our D retreats and backs in all the time.

Who did the buds use to shadow him? Kerfoot or Mikheyev?

I cannot guess. For real.
Is it McAvi, as he was MIA the last two...

I thought it was Neal coming back onto the top line, specifically so RNH can be put back with Draisaitl. Edmontonians seem to believe that RNH-Drai-Yamomoto is secretly the most dominant line in the league.

Engvall or whatever his name is was on him for a while.
Brought back fond memories of Stu Gavin.

I'm pretty sure some have posted in here in the past that McDavid's numbers when Backlund is on the ice aren't anywhere near as good as when he isn't. McDavid typically owns the Flames but it doesn't usually come at Backlund's expense. It's IMO been on the coaches for not always matching the lines as aggressively as other teams do.
If you commit to Backlund vs McDavid 5 on 5 (Flames don't seem to try to get hin out against McDavid on the road) they would contain him more often and limit him to just being a PP threat. But every year they seem to be ok with Monahan or Bennett getting caught out against him and they usually pay for it

Well, t’s pretty hard to match 100% against a guy who plays 27minutes

McDavid and Backlund 5 on 5 ice time isn't far off. McDavid gets 5 mins a game on the pp though.
Backlund gets extra ice just vs the oilers im ok with it if the results are that McDavid isn't getting 5 points.
McDavid averages 17 mins 5 on 5. Backlund gets 17 plus his pk time that's around 20 min night.

McDavid’s averages drop when he gets a bunch of points early. In a close game he’s way up there.

McDavid has pedestrian numbers against all of Giordano, Lindholm, Mangiapane and Backlund.
If I'm reading it right McDavid doesn't have a five on five point against Giordano in the last two years.

So if you committ to the Backlund line with Mangiapane on it and Gio vs McDavid the Flames could contain him much better than they have
But somehow he kills us in his career. But maybe its been better in the last 2 years
Tanev and Monahan should match up against Draisaitl imo

Better be Hanifin or someone, not Gio. Gio can't move enough to control McD any more. Brody could.

McDavid has not killed the Flames. He’s had a couple huge games and the rest he’s been pretty contained.
Gio v. McD worked in the past. I think it’d be too much for Gio now. But I think if you put any dedicated player on McDavid as long as it’s not a guy that will take a bunch of penalties, it can work.
