Sounds like Lehner got squeezed out with his salary demands and took a one year prove it deal with Chicago with all the spots filled.

Yes he had a great season, but it was only one season. There is a lot of risk involved with him and I think this is evident by the lack of a long term offer from any team.

Islanders have one of the best goalie coaches in the league and all they were willing to offer was a 2 year, $5million AAV contract. That tells you something.

If Lehner can put up another great season, then he absolutely deserves big term and money on his next contract next year, but right now, he is a big question mark, about as big a question mark to me as Cam Talbot or Mike Smith.
One of the best goalie coaches in the league and “all they were willing to offer was” $2-3 million more per season than Smith and Talbot??? With an additional year?

Yeah, it tells me he’s a significantly better goalie than Smith or Talbot.

Talbot and Smith had bad years and got half the money.

That tells me more.

More likely insurance against a likely injury of Crawford.

Wow, some of you really hate the Talbot deal eh? I'm not equating the 3 contracts.

I'm not saying Lehner is not better. I'm saying he's had a volatile career and he's still a big risk.

He's had one good year. The Isles, with all their inside knowledge of the guy, was only willing to offer a 2 year deal. They want to see more than one year because they understand there is risk.

I'm not defending Talbot or Smith or saying they are better. I'm saying there is as much risk for all 3 goalies. Lehner, coming off a better season than the other two, warrants the premium.

I am furious that the Flames didn't go harder on Lehner. He has the same career save percentage as Carey Price.

Treliving really blew it on this one. They must really like Rittich.

I got blasted a bit in the Talbot rumour thread, for suggesting it was a mistake for that deal to be 'done' once the Lehner rumour came out, that he was moving on from NYI.

I gotta feel the Flames missed the boat with Lehner... especially as he signs this sweet deal. I suspect CGY could have had him for that same deal, as one would have to think he'd have a better chance at having an excellent season and setting himself up for a payday next year.

I thought no one was prying Lehner out of NYI.

Makes me have buyers remorse over Talbot knowing Lehner was getting moved.

Chances are we would've had to pay more. Canadian team premium and all. I would've offered him 3x 5.5m though

His career save percentage is .918, same as Price. Mostly with Ottawa and Buffalo.

I think the guy is a pretty good goalie.

I'll take the guy who is half the price and had one bad year over the guy who can't decide If he's Patrick Roy or Dan from my beer league team.

I am wondering if the Flames targeted Talbot exclusively with the intent to keep both the term and cap hit down, in large part because the organization believes in David Rittich's long term potential as a starter. Goalies like Lehner, Mrazik, and Varlamov don't fit the model in which David Rittich will be counted upon to take a step this year.

Maybe he chose the Hawks because a western suburb of Chicago has one of the best mental health facilities in the country

The guy literally said "career save percentage." He wasn't talking specifically about the one year he played with Trotz.

I like the Talbot deal.

I didn’t understand the statement “that tells you something” when you opened with how much goalie knowledge the Isles have, and how they offered more money and term than anyone else. That tells me, no question marks there for them.

Also, saying he’s only had one good season is rubbish.

Scott Powers @ByScottPowers
Lehner said he was willing to make a two-year deal with the Islanders work, but they had already moved on when he finally decided. He's ready to "turn the page and move forward."

Ok, but they turned around and offered the same money for 4 years to a goalie that they aren't as familiar with.

That doesn't seem odd to you that they would offer Varlamov a bigger contract than Lehner?
